Hi,
The difference between these 3 meds is that they each contain different opioids of varying potency, in addition to APAP.
1) Darvocet contains Dextro-propoxyphene, a Methadone-derivative, which is the weakest opioid amongst the 3. Unfortunately it's also the most toxic. It's potency is roughly 2/3 to equal that of Codeine (1/20th the strength of Morphine). Also, for smokers it requires double the dosage to get the same effect due to the chemicals in cig smoke partially inhibiting the enzyme that metabolizes this drug).
2) Vicodin contains Hydrocodone which is about 1/4th the strength of Morphine. (40mg Hydrocodone = 10mg Morphine)
3) Percocet contains Oxycodone, the strongest opioid amongst the 3. It's potency is equal or slightly more than that of *parenteral / injected* Morphine. (10mg Oxy = 10mg Morphine IM or 30mg oral Morphine)
Hope this helps.
AJ

NB: I would personally rate Darvocet as one of the worst opioids. In addition to it being toxic, it's analgesic effect is dubious (patients respond equally well to 600mg of aspirin compared with 65mg Propoxyphene HCl.)
Also note that Darvocet comes in 2 forms. Propoxyphene HCl & Propoxyphene Napsylate. 65mg of the HCl salt = 100mg of the Napsylate salt. For reasons beyond the scope of this question, the Napsylate version is an almost total waste of money in that it hardly provides much pain relief.

Of course it depends on the strength...they all take pain away and it's all in the trying. I have no clue as to the type of pain or where it's coming from though!

    What is Darvocet?
    • Propoxyphene (related to codeine) is in a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics. It works by changing the way the body feels pain.
    • Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of propoxyphene.
    • Together, acetaminophen and propoxyphene are used to relieve pain.
    • Darvocet may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

    What is Percocet?

Oxycodone is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers. It is similar to codeine.

Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of oxycodone.

The combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.

Percocet may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

    What is Vicodin?

Hydrocodone is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers. It is similar to codeine.

Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of hydrocodone.

The combination of acetaminophen and hydrocodone is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.

Vicodin may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Darvocet is a weak painkiller, doesn't do much. Vicodin is stronger, and is made out of hydrocodone. Percocet, from my experience, is the best pain reliever of the three. Percocet is oxycodone, and doesn't have the itchiness as a side effect like the vicodin does. Darvocet is basically equivalent to a few advil, and is pretty much useless when it comes to treating intense pain. What kind of pain are you seeking to relieve? I ask because I was in a car accident, and subsequently have been diagnosed with herniated lumbar discs, fibromyalgia, and myofascial pain syndrome, all of which require tremendous amounts of pain killers. I've been on them all at one time or another, and have a pretty good knowledge of what they do and don't do.

I think darvocet SUCK. When I was in the hospital with my husband the nurse he has said that there was a study on darvocet and they found out that it is no stronger that tylenol that you can buy over the counter.

Darvocet is the mildest out of the the 3. All of them have acetamenophin in them of varying strengths. All of them are made with synthetic codeine type chemicals composites. Percocet is a compound of oxycodone and acetamenaphine. Percocet is the strongest am most addicitive of these 3 drugs. Percocet also requires a special form of RX from the doctor in order to be filled. (Acetamenaphine is the generic of Tylenol to simplify for you)

All of these medication require a prescription from a licensed medical doctor. All of these meds have the capacity to become habit forming or addictive in nature.

Stick with over the counter meds such as Tylenol/Advil for general pain. The above meds should be used for severe pain due to surgery or other ailment which pain is not relieved by over the counter meds.

If you are asking which med will get you more stoned.... maybe you should check out Narc annon.

Percocet is stronger than both Darvocet and Vicodin. All three are derivatives of Opiate class agents. The breakdown..
Schedul II DRUGS; Percocet, Percodan, Tylox (same combos different Trade names= Oxycodone Hydrocloride 5mg + Acetaminophen (tylenol) 500mg.
Schedule III; Darvocet= Propoxephene Napsylate 5mg and Tylenol 500mg
Schedule III; Vicodin= Hydrocodone Bitartrate 5mg and Tylenol 500mg

These are the differences. Hope this helps....
One other note, for those pts that suffer from codeine allergies or reactions, you can best believe that you or your loved ones will suffer the same reactions with "ALL" of these products. They are all derived from the same plant/agent....opium

BTW...Afghanistan is a major producer of this shitty plant.
