What is the best way to keep spiders + snakes away from my old farm house? we saw a snake crawl under my porch

what about putting moth balls where we saw the snake?

The spiders are attracted to insects, which are attracted to garbage. Clean out under the house. Mice probably live under the house in the garbage, and snakes eat mice. A cat will keep the mouse problem down, and will scare the snakes away. Also, be wary of quick-fixes like dumping things on the ground. Animals have a way of learning to get around obstacles to get to food, and you might end up attracting more of what you want to avoid. Fruit flies love coffee grounds, and spiders love fruit flies...

So: clean out under the house and get a cat.
