Should the home computer remain powered up overnight?
There seem's to be an argument everynight over this and I need your guidance, only the kids think it should remain left on!

Once I'm done on the computer, I turn it off and then off from the mains and its perfectly fine. Its just waste of energy and is makign you pay more then is necessary for your bills, turn it off and save money.

- I've enjoyed your answer as it's my thoughts too. I think I've also now convinced the kid's, well, until next week, but it's a start environmentally wise.

What is the purpose of you leaving your computer on overnight in the first place all you are doing is wasting electricity.

Modern computers can handle being turned off every night. Keeping them on just wastes electricity.

If there is a reasion to have it on i.e. virus scanning, defrag ect. then leveing it on over night, now and then is OK. There is really no need know to have it turned on every night that I know of and it will save you cash in the long run.

My partner leaves his pc on overnight all the time, because he always has torrents and downloads going. He has surge protectors on the plugs to stop it from being damaged. I personally think its a waste of electricity...

Turn it off, plug it into a power strip and shut it of a screen then turn off power at strip, set your updates for sometime during the day. it will update automatically when you power it up during the day. Or leave it on at night if you like throwing money away.

Kids seem to think they know it all, I have 2 sons (21 and 25) and one is a computer tech...they both 'believe' that it's the gospel to leave the computers on 24/7- yet they continually have viruses, bugs, crashes, etc.
I have over 7 computers in my graphic business, macs and PC's-and not ONE is left on over nite. Never had a crash, never had a virus-because the PC's are NEVER left on line.
NO updates are needed-if your programs are working fine, why mess with it? Leave it alone! It's the computer software companies that make money convincing you that you HAVE to update! Funny-a new virus comes out-everyone panics-and the next day a virus 'cure' is released...okay, how did they KNOW ahead of time about the virus before it hit? Think about it....duh...........
