How do i know i need a new router for my network?

Question

my internet has been going in and out, how do i know if it's my router of cable box? and is there a way to test either? thanks

I agree with the answer of bypassing your router and see if it is droping out. another way is when it goes out go look at the light status on your cable modem see if all the lights that need to be on are on if not could be your modem if so then I would by pass your router for a day or 2 see if it droping out with out it if not then your router may be fine you may just need to get a firm ware up date for your router and I know with most routers that is not hard to find out just check their site if you are running my fav brand wich is Netgear you can log into your router and click on check for updates and it will automacily update your router before you do a firm ware up date you want to back up your config. that way if the firm ware update messes any thing up then you can just re inport your config thats whare I would start as strange as it may sound if everything is working fine with out the router hooked up then try a new stright through cable from your router to the modem someties then can go bad to start at the most simple stuff and work your way up and if the connection drops with out the router call your isp ASAP have them take a look at your lines make sure their is not a issue on their side keep in mind you do not want to tell them you are using a router chances are if its Comcast they will give you a bag of SH** about it well all the answers I saw in here were pretty good I agree with all of them for the most part.

make sure its not on the server side (company) power cycle both router and modem by unplugging it for a min and plugging it back in.

You can try bypassing the router and see if it drops....

Its probably not your router, if its a name brand. You probably should call the call the cable company. They can do a test over your line to see if your connection to the cable modem has a problem. If that doesn't fix it you might have a virus on your computer.
