Fruit flies (I think)?

I'm not sure if I have fruit flies, but I'm definitely ready to do anything I can to get rid of them. It's been a couple of months, and I discovered a couple of rotten apples in the back of my cabinet, which I got rid of. I've cleaned EVERYTHING and have just sprayed an herbal insecticide all over the kitchen. I've also made a trap of fruit juice in a plastic-wrap covered glass with holes in the plastic - hopefully if they collect in there, I'll know they're fruit flies.

They fly slow and heavy like fruit flies, but they collect anywhere there's standing water (like my cat's bowl) and die in the water. It's weird - if they like water so much, why does it kill them? And they don't seem to crowd on food, but I haven't left any fruit out so I can't tell. They swarm me when I'm sitting in the living room. It's freaking gross.

Looking at the dead ones, it looks like they're small, with roundish striped bodies, and I think I've noticed that they have a red head.

Any ideas?

Have you made SURE that you have removed all rotton fruit/veggies from the area? Wash the area with bleach water, ALL OVER. That should take care of it. Good luck. I have had this problem at work and doing the above things helped out within a day.

Pour pepper mint oil in v tiny containers and keep it in every possible corner of your room/house ..it keeps away insects and flies from you.
In stores I have seen my friends doing that as they have to do sampling for food and it works. All the best.

Peppermint oil is also an all-natural way to deter ants from being inside and outside the home, though it will need to be reapplied every few days (in sparse amounts) until the ants are fully discouraged. This natural substance seems to work on most species of ant.[wikipedia]
