An indictment is a felony charge that is brought forward against a person after a grand jury has listened to the probable cause and decided it is a "true bill".

example #1: a person is charged with grand larceny, goes to district (lower) court, and the judge certifies the case to the grand jury.

example #2: a police investigator gathers evidence that a person comitted grand larceny, does not arrest them, but instead presents the probable cause directly to the grand jury for an indictment. Then the person is arrested on the indictment.

Example: Michael Vick was indicted on charges of dogfighting a few months ago. He also pled guilty to those charges, but that is still an example.

an indictment, is a bill handed down by the Grand Jury telling the District Attorney, United states attorney, etc.. that they believe there is enough evidence for them to arrest, and charge the person with the crime.
