These words concern the England's first attempts to colonize the New World, some time before 1587. Because the colonists could not be found when ships of new supplies for them arrived in 1590, it is called the Lost Colony.

English Roanoake colonists thought to have fled to Croatoan Island; Manteo was a Croatoan Indian they had befriended. Wanchese is a town in North Carolina near where this took place.

L'anse aux Meadows is the site of the only authenticated Viking settlement in North America, in present-day Newfoundland. It pre-dated Columbus' discovery by at least 500 years.
