Sudafed and pregnancy?

I am 5 weks pregnant and have the most awful stuffed up nose. It was so bad last night that I went to the pharmacy and the pharmacist said sudafed is fine to take.

Also...what about Vicks Sinus Spray...is that okay? I bought a saline spray but it's not helping.

Obviously since it's the weekend I can't call the doctor till Tues. (Mon being a holiday). I just wanted to sure it is absoultly safe...because it's the only way I can get through this terrible congestion and prevent a sinus infection. I just dont want to harm my baby.

I have my first appointmnt Oct 19, so I dont even have an approved list yet to refer to. I was just so uncomfortable last night I knew I couldn't wait 3 days before taking something.

Thanks....it;s not working well for me either. I think I am going to call an on call doctor and ask about clortrimenton because the worked wonders for my allgeries at the begining of the summer. ast night was horrible...I slept only in 1/2 hour to 1 hour spurts because I'm so congested.

Nope... don't think so. I think your pharmacist told you the "only" think OTC that would work.

I think Tylenol Sinus is ok too.

Taking ANY med without your dr's ok while pregnant isn't a good idea.
call your dr.He has an answering service.

I have heard two things about meds (OTC, not Rx) and pregnancy: 1) It is OK to take Tylenol if you really need something (plain Tylenol with nothing else, that is, only acetaminophen); and 2) Never take anything during pregnancy, not even Tylenol.

For stuffy nose - try Vick's vapo rub. You don't ingest it. I would think that it would not harm the baby. You may still want to check with your doctor, though....

Don't take Sudafed or Sudafed PE, either. They mess with your blood pressure. Don't take the generic equivalents, either.

Ingest NO meds without OK from the doc!!!

You can call the office, anyway, they should have someone on call to answer your questions, but it would be courteous to wait until normal waking hours.

I have just had a baby, but had a couple of terrible colds and sinus during my pregnancy, My Dr said that sudafed is fine, in fact it is on the BIDMC list of approved medicines.

You should ring your local hospital and ask to speak with the nurse and ask them, vicks nasal spray is fine,a more natural one is Fess, works wonders in our family.About the Sudafed:This group of medications is used to treat colds or allergies. Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed), an FDA category C drug (to be used only if the benefits outweigh the risks), can be bought over the counter and is present in antihistamines as well as in cold remedies. These medications are not recommended for anyone who has high blood pressure, pregnant or not. If possible, avoid taking pseudoephedrine in the first trimester.
I did a search on google and you should read this page:
