If you are taking the drug Neurontin, or know someone who is, please read & respond?

If you are taking Neurontin, what it is prescribed to you for? How many do you take a day & when you take it, does it make you "high" or splurgy worded? The reason I ask is because my sister takes a lot of pills. She pretty much lives off of me & every month, she promises to straighten up & help with bills. But then pill time comes. I called her out on it today, telling her I knew she was high. Her excuse is that her Neurontins do that to her. She said Mental Health gave them to her, because she's bi-polar & that they prescribe her to take 6 a day, 2 at a time & they make her a little high & splurgy worded, swearing she's not pilled up on anything else. She's a liar & I dont believe her. Why would they prescribe her that many? I'm wondering if its possible & if they possibly do make a person seem high & splurgy worded. Honest answers much appreciated. Thanx!

Neurontin is not for mental health, it is used to treat seizures...if she doesn't have seizures, than she's most likely lying and is taking them to get high.

• If you are taking Neurontin for seizures, do not stop taking Neurontin even if you feel better. It is important to continue taking the medication to prevent seizures from recurring.
• Carry or wear a medical identification tag to let others know that you are taking this medicine in the case of an emergency.
• Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Neurontin may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities.

What is Neurontin?
• Neurontin affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain. The exact way that it works is unknown.
• Neurontin is used with other drugs in the treatment of some types of seizures and for the management of postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain caused by the herpes virus or shingles).
• Neurontin may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

I Take it as does my son for pain due to peripheral neuropathy. We both take a dosage of 1800 mg/day. I have not noticed any side effects. The following quote comes from the source cited below.

"SIDE EFFECTS: Drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, fatigue, vision changes, weight gain, nausea, dry mouth, or constipation may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: tremor or shaking, swollen arms/legs. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: loss of coordination, mental/mood changes. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: persistent sore throat/fever/cough, unusual bleeding/bruising, pain/redness of arms or legs, chest pain, trouble breathing, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, hearing loss, stomach/abdominal pain. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist."

Neurontin does not do this. However, being in a manic period of bipolar illness can. As well as being on illegal drugs. Does she not get assistance with the cost of her medication? Neurontin is VERY expensive ( usual monthly doses, especially at high doses, can be hundreds of dollars )and if she is on alot of medication....would she be able to afford it ? I've not seen Neurontin used for bipolar illness. Something doesn't sound right. If she gives permission for her healthcare provider to give you information, you can talk to him/her directly and voice your concern. As a healthcare provider myself, alot of times with these sort of illnesses, the family is a much better resource of patient information than the patient .....and I welcome it. Tell her if she has nothing to hide.....she should not object to your being involved in her healthcare. In your position, I would demand it from her. I doubt you'll know any other way. And it would be to her benefit.....her healthcare provider would be in a better position to treat her with the increased information and your perspective on her behavior at home.

I take Neurontin... it is prescribed for me by my pain management Doctor for nerve pain. And, yes it does make you blonde! I have trouble with my memory, I can be talking about something and not remember a simple word... like sock... I don't drive anymore as my concentration is so off, I can get distracted by a spot on the window and be compelled to clean it... I don't handle finances anymore... as I can't trust myself to balance everything... I carry a timer around if I'm doing anything like watering the yard... cooking... running a tub... so I don't forget what I'm doing!

It has been very hard for me as I am an intelligent person, I've never had problems like this before. It is embarrassing, I've found myself not going anywhere because of it. If I didn't have a good sense of humor it would have done me in.

My Doctor tells me that you can take up to 2000mg a day. My dose is no where near that strong... You need to find out what her dose is and exactly why she is taking it... I would talk to a pharmacist about this... Read the side effects... there are many. Neurontin works on the brain to stop pain receptors.

I hope this helps... I'm not exactly comfortable saying so much.

YOU CANNOT GET HIGH OFF OF NEURONTIN, nor is it only prescribed for shingles or seizures. I had a psychiatrist put me on Neurontin as a mood stabiliser and while it worked great at first (I felt a tad calmer, and it might have been my mind playing tricks on me), it somehow, over time, lost it's affect. It hasn't been approved to be used as a mood stabiliser, but some doctors do give it out. Now, if she was taking Lithium or Xanax... then you should be concerned. But Neurontin, no. It's not a "high" producing drug.

Both of me and my daughter take neurontin for different reasons. She's 15 and she takes it for her headaches and her anixeity, I take it for carparl tunnels syndrome in my writst from using crutches every day. When I first started and my daughter also until our bodies got used to it were really sleepy but this affect went away after about 3 weeks. If your sister is truly going to a mental health center you should call and ask to speak to her doctor or who ever's writing the prescriptions. Let them know what you see your sister experinceing and let them know that she won't be able to live in your house if she continues to not take care of her responibities. Next you should let them know if you think that she's over medicting herself. If you look on the bottle it should give you the doses on the bottle. If the doses isn't on the bottle than you really should let her doctor know what's she's doing because she may be taking something that they are unaware of. My daughter takes 800 mgs of Neurontin at night and I take 200 a day 100 in the morning and another 100 in the night. So it's possible that you sister is on 600 mgs of Neurontin my daughter started on 900 and her psychiatrist say that's not a lot. Remember that shes only 15 so you really should check the bottles. Also you have to make up you mind how much longer you're going to put up with her not taking responsiblity for her self. As long as you let her get away with what she's doing why should she change?? She has everything that she needs. It's you that's unhappy. Check the bottles and with her doctors and than make sure that you decide how much more you'll take and give her a deadline and make sure that you stick with it.
