Depends on how close it is. If you have the time and available roadway head at a right angle to the tornado, never directly away from it. Most tornadoes track northeast so your best bet is to head south or southeast. Other than that get out of the car and into a ditch if you can. If not, make peace with your maker.

Your best answer is full of s**t. Right angle, southeast?!
Get the F*** outta your car and into a basement, ditch or something where you can cover yourself.

Get out of the car if at all possible, taking shelter in a building, lie flat in a ditch, whatever. The car is better than nothing at all, but not much.

Try to drive under an overpass or a sturdy bridge.

Get as far away as possible don't be like one of those morons who follow storms and stop to watch accidents and fires.

Experienced it once in Orlando, Fl. in a conversion van. Warning came on radio to get out and lay in a ditch along the highway. We felt safer remaining in the van, thankfully we were safe but saw major damage to a hotel near us. Very scary howling wind sounds.

get out and try to find a ditch or low ravine to lay in, if that's not available, laying on the ground is safer than being in a car. Never try to outrun a tornado in your car.

Most tornado's are usually heading east or north east, often between 40 to 80 miles per hour. If you spot it in time, head south. If there is no traffic, no pot holes, and no turns, most cars should be able to out run it. If you do not have time, try to find shelter in an empty ditch. It will probably be raining, and water will collect. Also, you don't want any large debris that the wind can pick up and slam into you. Stay away from any overpasses. They become a wind tunnel as the tornado stirs things up (including cars). If the tornado comes up behind you, and you don't have time to get out of the car; make sure your seat belt is snug, and hang on. It's going to be a rough ride. Be prepared to duck, things may come through the windows and doors, too. Remember, even just seeing a tornado in the distance makes for a great story to tell the grand kids, you just have to live long enough to have grand kids.

If it's coming right at you, get out of the car and lie down in a ditch if you can

Get out of your car and find either a ditch, a well constructed building or another low lying area. You NEVER try to out run a tornado!!!! That is the worst advise that I've ever heard. Also, do not get under a bridge or overpass. Tornado's can go in any direction and are really un-predictable.

PER STORM PREDICTION CENTER get out of your car, go to the lowest ditch or culvert watch for extremely heavy rain and be an idiot and drowned.

Like kevpet (the first answerer) said, if you can, go away from the tornado (moving around it) but don't move directly away from it. They are fast and it would barrel down on you. But I suggest just pulling off the road and getting into a ditch. BUT DO NOT (as tempting as it is) pull under an overpass. Many people have gotten killed from doing that. Either the overpass has collapsed on them, or the wind has caught them under the overpass. I've read about that happening a lot, and many meterologists say that is a big no no. But it'd be better if you are in a town or city with open businesses such as stores, gas stations, resteraunts, etc, to go to one of those places. I remember last year going home and the sirens went off so thankfully we weren't on the country roads yet, we were in the city so we stopped at Steak N' Shake.
