Can aspertame kill you?

Some shmuck on my bus said that my Diet Coke that I was drinking could kill me, and he said it was the aspertame.

I know that caffiene is unhealthy, and Coke does not have THAT much(unlike Red Bull), but aspertame?

Is that bullsh.i.t?

The only thing about aspartame is that it was only created in the 70s so no one knows the long term effects of it yet.

Studies have shown that normal consumption of aspartame MAY have a link to lymphoma and other diseases. No definitive proof has been discovered. In extreme doses, it has been shown that it can contribute to cancer.

No, that is a complete myth. People swear up and down that aspartame is a dangerous, even deadly, chemical. However, many studies have shown it to be safe.

I think the myth that aspartame is dangerous was created by the manufacturers of competing artificial sweeteners.

It should also be noted that regular soda is very unhealthy. Also, I would stay away from Splenda, another sweetener. They claim it is made from sugar, but that is extremely misleading. It is actually created by replacing some of the molecules the create sugar with chlorine molecules.

dude regular coke could kill you. walking could kill you. shopping could kill you. but i guess that's besides the point.

non-sugar sweeteners can cause cancer, but so can a lot of things...

splenda is better. drink diet coke with splenda, splenda is made from sugar. not bad for you.

but don't drink regular coke. it has high fructose corn syrup in it, which causes the lectin in your body to decrease, making you not feel full when eating a meal. don't do it!!!

I don't have an exact answer for you, but I can tell you that a lady I know, who happens to be a nutritionist, said something similar to me. She didn't say it would kill me exactly. But, she did say that aspartame is actually worse for you than simply consuming sugar. She said that it has something to do with the fact that it doesn't break down and leave your body, but instead it accumulates. She also said something about the fact that it's been shown to kill brain cells.

Now, she could be a quack...but, perhaps a chemist or someone with some experience in the matter could address it. I've been wondering the same thing myself.

    Good Question!

I'm not sure if it can kill you, but I do know it causes problems for me the joints in my arms and fingers get really sore and stiff if I even chew one piece of gum with aspartame in it. I do know that aspartame when digested turns into formaldehyde and splenda when digested turns into chlorine.. hope this helps.

Anything can kill you in large enough quantities. Write the manufacturer and ask for an MSDS. He's obligated to send one. It will give the LD50 - the lethal dose that kills 50% of the test population. It's given in mg of product per Kg of test species.

I.e. If it's 300 mg per Kg on rats, at 150 pounds, you would have a 50% chance of dying if you consumed 20 gm (about 5 tsp)

Aspartame might not kill you (and I have not heard anyone else say it will) but it has been associated with some brain disorders (something about disrupting electrical firing, or something) and the Atkins Diet people say avoid it because they have found that people stall in their diet/weight loss when using it. Personally I avoid it because it causes me huge migraines, esophogeal swelling, vomitting and nausea for days after intake so I can't think it is good for anyone.

It is even said that it shouldn't be on the market and got FDA approval through backroom tactics.

There are lots of sites on the subject but you might want to start with the Aspartame Consumer Safety Network linked below.

P.S. Splenda is actually made from real sugar and is a much better option. You can even cook with it!
