My partner's greek, and wants a greek wedding reception - what does this entail?

what is included in a traditional greek wedding reception? i've heard of things like pinning money to the bride's dress... can anyone help?

Well, it depends if this wedding will take place in Greece or in the States - because what is shown on my big fat greek wedding is of course a caricature and we certainly do not pin money to the brides' dress. And anyway, even in Greece a wedding reception is different than one in Creta. I suggest you ask your partner what exactly he is thinking of, in detail and especially how many guests he wants from his side (many to be honest, because parents tend to invite all their friends and the most distant relatives) and if the music will only be traditional greek music and what the food will be. Make a calculation and then try to think whether you can spend 2 or more weeks in an exotic destination for this money.

Lol, watch my big fat greek wedding. Greek weddings are alot of fun and energy but also a little weird. Think spitting on the bride (not so common these days), Shots of really strong liquor, plate smashing, circle dancing, money dancing and carrying around the bride and groom. Lots of fun with a big family but if you are looking for a demure, refined, elegant wedding you might be in for a surprise!

I'm not sure about the details of a greek wedding, but I know they are always a HUGE affair. They tend to have all family there, a few hundred people. Make sure you have a BIG budget, although with greek weddings, parents usually contribute heaps. I just hope, your dream wedding is not small and intimate because when marrying a greek, that it won't be. I suggest you watch 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'.
