It is unknown to what degree La-bas is based on Huysmans' real experiences, or whether the author even attended a genuine Black Mass. He was just dabbling. I'd venture to say that, even if the book was based on a real order, Huysmans didn't know what it was. The character who leads the narrator Durtal into Satanism was supposedly based on Berthe Courrière, a courtesan who had affairs with Huysmans, other Decadent authors and artists, and priests. I found a book that focuses in part on fin-de-siecle France that you might look into; it's called A Dark Muse: A History of the Occult By Gary Lachman. Good luck!

P.S. Why don't you give me best answer for your other La-bas question?
