It is one of my favorites! It's about an author in 19th century France writing about 15th century serial killer Gilles de Rais, who murdered a bunch of children as a part of Satanic rituals. The author also meets modern-day satanists and attends a Black Mass. He regularly visits a pious bell-ringer in a cathedral as well, and the book is partially about his struggle with faith.
Huysmans is a Decadent writer, so his work is very stylized and richly detailed. The portions of the book about Gilles de Rais are very disturbing and memorable. Another of Huysmans' well-known books is A Rebours, which I would also recommend, about a jaded aristocrat seeking out increasingly exotic diversions. That one is referenced in Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray and is a Decadent classic.
