Why don't girls like jazz?

Okay, for all you people who say girls like jazz, they don't.

And by the way I don't mean singers/standards or latin or smooth jazz (smooth jazz is funk, not jazz). I mean real JAZZZZZ jazz, like agressive swing...i don't know, miles davis before he got all modern.

I don't mean Sinatra and I don't mean lovey ballads, I mean JAZZZZZ!!!! Like okay I thought of a better question and im gonna post it

it depends on the girl. different people listen to different types of music. some people like slow jams, others like oldies, and there are people who love the 'in' music such as rap & hiphop. sooo just keep in mind that there are girls out there that like jazz. mkay?

i love jazz. I''m teaching myself jazz piano. but yeah, it does seem like more guys like it than girls. i was the only girl in my schools jazz band.

well, girls LOVE jazz. all types. i am one of those. most of my girl friends agree with me. (those that don't, haven't heard GOOD jazz).

having no lyrics makes a nice change from mainstream music, and besides, being a jazz player myself, no vocals is GREAT!

OK, all kidding aside, I think you are generalizing a bit here and that is a slippery slope! Let's face it, it's not just 'girls' who don't like the jazz you are speaking of - try to get some guy right off the street to listen. Guess what? He doesn't like it either.

Being a musician and a huge jazz lover (6'4", 285 lbs), I listen to it all and I understand that not everyone is going to like the really hard-core, esoteric stuff. Even you seem to have a problem categorizing Miles. Miles wasn't swing, he was far from that!

You simply cannot drop in a CD by Ornette Coleman or Eric Dolphy or Miles and expect everyone to understand and dig the sounds. This goes for men or women.

I don't like jazz piano cause it sounds like elevator music or the intro to Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. I like John Coltrane though, especially "Dedicated to You" and "In a Sentimental Mood". And I like most of the stuff Shaker's Jazz Ensemble plays. I just can't stand jazz piano.

BUT!!!! that's just my opinion.

This is subjective. Some girls like jazz, while others don't. Why don't you do a survey on girls that like jazz? :]

Although greatly generalizing I would have to say that why 'girls' (under the age of 30) as well as plenty of 'guys' don't usually like jazz is because jazz is art music and requires much *effort* to enjoy. There's plenty of music out there that is more easily assimilated as pleasure than jazz. This is why great jazz (or any great music) will stand the test of time - there is something always new to hear again and again as your experience with it grows. Younger girls don't have time for this and it usually doesn't generate an immediate gratification response, that say, dance music always has had. Also, guys tend to be impressed by different things in music than are women, which is a whole 'nother question.

Some of the greatest jazz singers in the world are women. Not so many musicians but go to a jazz event and look around at the audience.

Truthfully I think it is a matter of exposure and frankly many folks are unaware and have not be exposed.
I am a female and was exposed to this Art form early from my parents and subsequently Men who I was dating. I love Music and definitely love this African American art form Called Jazz which is truly Our Own.
