Where does the term backpack rap come from?

I know it represents underground in a sense and probably the college scene but just wondering if any other hip-hop heads knew where it derived from. 1

it usually describes alot of underground new york and chicago rappers.....the term backpack rapper derived from rappers who would use public transit (buses, subways, etc.) rather than driving around the city in a car, so for that purpose they had to carry around backpacks holding their CD's, and other music related items.
