I see this on tv from time to time, like on g4, and other places. They actually have puppets that bleed when you do things like rip their heads off and stuff, not to be weird but this would make a great prop, but I can't find any place that tells you how to do this.
If you want to make a sock puppet bleed in a way that's not to expensive, or messy--consider the red silk handkerchief method. This is the way I see folks who do live shows do it. It's best if you have to do it over and over again in show after show. It's really simple--just put the handkerchief inside the puppet. When you take the head off, allow the handkerchief to bubble up out of the hole. A really silky handkerchief will do this almost naturally as you push it out.
It's a cool effect and not as distressing to an audience. (For some reason, some audiences don't seem to like being sprayed with fake blood. Go figure.)
I would assume that somewhere where the body part is going to be ripped off there is some form of tubing system that pumps red stuff up with a small hand held bulb. But i'm just guessing
