Is it safe to mix xanax and lorazepam?

Xanax and lorazepam are from the same category, benzodiazepines. In theory, there's nothing wrong with mixing both; but you will have increased effects (sedation, dizziness, hallucinations, respiratory depression,etc). Some people take Xanax for anxiety and Ativan (lorazepam) as needed to sleep. As a pharmacist, I don't like the idea of having my patients in more than one benzodiazepine, because they basically do the same (only the duration of action is the difference between them), specially because of the side effects. Is it safe to use both? It depends on the dose and the use. Don't do it without consulting your doctor.

I woudnt, they are similar and Xanax works just fine by itself.

I have but not together if I am not wanting to get drowsy then I take the lorazepam,

No. They are both benzodiazepines, and you shouldn't be prescribed both at once. If you haven't been prescribed either, then you shouldn't be taking them at all.

Benzodiazepines can cause you to stop breathing and die. Xanax lasts a long time, so if you take that, and then take lorazepam on top of it, you can get yourself into trouble. Wash it down with alcohol, and you can really hurt yourself. (Look up "Karen Ann Quinlan")
