Do a lot of Koreans get plastic surgery?

One of my Korean friends was telling me that she was considering it but she decided not to because she did not want to look like everybody else. Is it popular in Korea?

It has become so common that it is weird if you haven't had surgery and you don't fulfill the Korean definition of pretty. What I mean by that is if you don't have double eyelids, tall nose, small face, etc. Koreans have this set standard of what they think is pretty. It is very popular in the entertainment industry but by no means is it subject to just celebrities. A lot of common people get it. The most common one is the double eyelid. (The percentage of plastic surgery done in the U.S and Korea are not the same!!)
Some celebrities who have had surgery. (But again, it's not just the celebrities who do it!)

Oh GOD YES! Plastic surgery is a huge industry in Korea. Many people, including men, try to maintain their youthful looks by going under the knife. External appearances plays a critical role in Korean culture. Those who are more attractive tend to obtain better jobs, especially those in the entertainment industry. It is the face that sells and Koreans want to cash in.

It was recently published that the percentage of the popualtion that has plastic surgery in Korea is no greater than the percentage of the American population that has it.
It is still a hobby for the wealthy. It is no cheaper or easier in Korea than anywhere else.
The difference, and why it seems to get a lot of press, is the type of surgeries that are popular.
REcently, the paper reported that while rhinoplasty was the most popular in the US, eyes and eyelids were the most popular for Korean women, while hin and ears were the most popular for Korean men.
I think a lot is made of the "eye widening" surgeries in western media, but the more popualr surgeries here involve trimming back hte heavy eyelid actually. (which makes the eye appear wider)
There was a recent article on people having better life or love or wealth lines carved or tattooed into theirpalms, for those who believe in it, but this , I think, was a very sensationalistic piece. You would be hard pressed to find a lot of Koreans walking around with "palm surgery" scars.

It is ridiculous to try to say that the percentage of Koreans who have had plastic surgery is similar to that of the US. Sounds like a Korean tabloid. Some of the newspapers there often have about as much as credibility as the Weekly World News here. It is hugely popular and cheap enough for most people do it. And it is not always easy to get a job working with the public if you don't meet the strangely Western standards of a high nose and "double eyelids."

If you are considering plastic surgery, you must be honest with yourself. Exactly why do you want surgery? And, what are your goals for surgery-what do you expect plastic surgery to do for you?
There are two categories of patients who are good candidates for surgery. The first includes patients with a strong self-image, who are bothered by a physical characteristic that they'd like to improve or change. After surgery, these patients feel good about the results and maintain a positive image about themselves.
The second category includes patients who have a physical defect or cosmetic flaw that has diminished their self-esteem over time. These patients may adjust rather slowly after surgery, as rebuilding confidence takes time. However, as they adjust, these patients' self-image is strengthened, sometimes dramatically.
It's important to remember that plastic surgery can create both physical changes and and changes in self-esteem. If you are seeking surgery with the hope of influencing a change in someone other than yourself, you might end up disappointed. It's possible that friends and loved ones will respond positively to your change in appearance and self-confidence, however understand and accept that plastic surgery will not cause dramatic changes in people other than you.

Contacting a plastic surgeon is probably the best idea for advice. These sites have a lot of other helpful information…
