Can I take 2 vicodin for my first dose?

so I just got home from the ER and they gave me 2 vicodin for tonight and a perscription to fill tomorrow. I have a major case of dry socket and I know that pain therapy is best when the pain meds are taken before pain becomes server, otherwise it won't work as well. Well right now I'm in severe pain and I'm wondering if I could take both vicodin right now for my first dose to get the pain down and then continue on the normal dosage. They are 5mg hydrocodone (or whatever that is) and 500mg acetimenophine (spelling). My biggest concern is if 1000mg of acetimenophine is too much at once. I know that 10mg of hydrocodone won't hurt me (I've had the 10mg ones before)

Hi:

That is not something that I would agree with you doing. The doc wrote 2 for the night, then you need to follow his instructions. Vicodin is a very potent pain killer and it is not meant to be taken any other way than as prescribed.

Be safe and be well

The "Best Answer" is wrong. Actually, most of the answers to the question are wrong. You could have taken both of the 5/500 Vicodin right away - as long as you hadn't had more than a total of 3000mg Tylenol in the prior 24 hours. Also, Tylenol has potential to negatively affect the liver, not heart.

I recently broke my leg and was prescribed the same dosage of vicodin and I was taking 2 pills every 4-6 hours. I would probably only take one at a time since you only have 2 to get you through the night. Though it is fine to take both at the same time.

I would take the one vicodin first and save the second one for later if you haven't had vicodin before one should be enough to take care of your pain.as far as i know you are not suppose to take more than 5 or 6 grams of acetaminophen in a 24 hr. period as this could lead to a heart attack.

Since you state they gave you two vicodin at the ER, don't take more until you get your RX filled tomorrow. (Unless you first consult with your Doctor). This is a very strong pain medication and can make you very ill even taking it as prescribed. One extra strength tylenol is equal to 500 mg acetimenaphine and you take two of those at once. It is the narcotic ingredient you must be more concerned about, even though it is dangerous to take too much tylenol. Please call your Doctor. Vicodin always makes me very sick. There are other pain meds he may want to try. If you're okay w/the Vicodin, ask him/her first before taking more than initially prescribed.

It probably won't kill ya, but why take the chance. Vicodin makes a lot of people ill, so it's best to take 1 until you know you can tolerate them.
