If you're more interested in making your own images over altering others, try looking into Illustrator. It's a lot like photoshop, but more geared towards original creations rather than altering already existing images.

photoshop X is really good if you want to do more than that as well. you can create graphics like the words but on photos you can edit them too, like remove blemishes, create a good looking suntan, remove lines and wrinkles from photos. and it's got a teaching bar where it shows you things you can do and how. i bought mine for about $130 but i believe it's cheaper now since there's a photoshop 11

photoshop is a commercial program and not a free download. As your question implies, you may be looking for a free download. There are several good legal freeware photo editors that you can use

I found a ton of good ones on Cnet downloads, and there were another 100 to download. But I accidentally set my "GIMP" graphics program to open my picture files but It was the best mistake I ever made. The Gimp is much much much more advanced then ANY ANY ANY ANYTHING you can find in the photoshop program software world. And as a bonus you get all the other toys ! Learning how to use The Gimp is well worth the time invested. It can make someones life much more interesting,and more beautiful too !!! Here is a safe place to Download
