Tick Bite....Does It Need Treatment?

Ok, I'm asking this in the pet section since I figure us pet owners are usually the one's that have run in's with these little monsters lol.

I was on a trail I walk almost everyday. But recently got a new dog & since he is not leashed trained yet walked in the more grassy "doggie lane" lol. Came home and found ticks ALL over me...big one's and little one's. Never knew you could pick up that many!!!!

Anyway, I ended up with what I thought was a seriously itchy mosquito bite, that became the size of a half a golf ball. Tonight I noticed a red ring going around it (uh oh). My sister flipped out when I told her about it and said I need to get on antibiotics right away.

Soooo....is she right? I mean I know alot of people who live on farms out here and get ticks on them.....they'd be in the poor house if they ran to the doc's everytime they got bit lol. But the red ring does worry me a bit.

get that checked, if it was a tick, then it must be inside of your skin. if you dont pull them off they will burry themselves inside you. you need to get it checked soon. so they can drain it and get the tick out, then give you some antibiotics, ticks carry alot of nasty diseases.

I would go to the doc asap. Ticks are known for carring lime disease. My cousins little guy got it here a couple years ago. Its nothing to mess with. Good luck and i hope it isn't that.
And one other thing. are you sure that you got the head out? It may have been left in and is now festering and infected.

The red ring should worry you get it removed by your Dr.
I live in the country in the bush everyday and my dogs nor myself have ever gotten a tick.
When you are out you need to check yourself and remove ticks right away with tweezers pulling gently but firmly getting the head as well. good luck

Ticks are the primary carriers of Lyme Disease. The Deer Tick species to be more precise, are the primary carriers of said Lyme Disease. Rub Rubbing Alcohol onto the bite or bites and apply a hydrocortisone cream to decrease the itching. The alcohol will act as a stimulant to release the contaminant or poisons and the hydrocortisone will definately help with the itching. Since most tick bites don't swell, you should definitely go into a doctor so he/she can have a look and determine if you may have contracted anything. Chances are rare, but I woudn't take any additional risks if there is allot of redness and swelling. A normal tick bite will itch for a while and then disapate. Ehrlichiosis in humans is rare but can occur, but it is normally Canis or transmitted to dogs.

Also ticks do not burrow into skin, but if pulled wrong they can leave the head behind which can lead to infection.

Some sort of ticks do bury themselves under your skin entirely. The issue her is that you have some kind of infection. You need to use some antibiotic ointment (Fucidin) on the spot, if not take antibiotic pills. And ticks can give you ehrilchia, so antibiotics may not be such a bad idea. Going to the doctors is advisable too, better safe than sorry.

Only mites can burrow all the way under the skin (but mites will burrow in around cuffs, like by the pant cuff or sleeve cuff). Ticks only bury the head. When you pull a tick, it's best either to make it back out by coating it with some nail polish or oil, or be really careful to pull it out the same way it went in, and make sure it's still got a head (it's gross but they'll have a long white tube, and that's the mouth sucker, and that's what normally gets left behind, and since that sucker goes into a blood vessel, you want that out). Then burn the tick. Don't throw it in the trash or try to squash it. Burn it.

I live on a farm, and we get ticks. Not too many, thankfully, but enough. And we only run to the docs office when the bite swells to the size of half a golf ball. Oh, and when they've got red rings.

Edit: I just re-read your question. If you didn't find or pull out a tick, and are just assuming it's a tick bite, then you need to go to the doctors. That could be a spider bite. Depending on the spider... I know that fiddler spiders leave a bite like that, and it can scar badly. Get some antihistamine cream on it now, and get to a doctor to have them check it.
