I’ve taken simple steps and a few more ambitious ones.

Believe it or not, one of the best, easiest, and most rewarding things you can do to save energy is eat locally. The average item on the American dinner plate has traveled 1500 miles. I eat locally and love it. I eat fresher & tastier.

I drive less. Traffic sucks; I take public transport everywhere and love it. I get to read when I’m en route instead of cursing the traffic. I walk and bike a lot, too.

For energy usage at home, I’ve upgraded my insulation and turned the thermostat down a few degrees, it’s just as comfortable and cut the bill by 20%. I have a flash water heater and energy star appliances. I’ve changed all the light bulbs, of course, to CFB’s, but now there are CFB’s with nicer softer light, so try those. I have power strips for all appliances so I can easily unplug all my devices when I’m not around to eliminate drawing “vampire power”.

On the more ambitious side, I’m currently converting electricity and gas over to solar and wind power generated on site at home.

Great ideas! Adding to it, may be: free energy by a temperature sensitive "fence" based on Tesla's research. This would eliminate use of resources without costs once established. For full solar power we need to clear the skies and get the deep blue sky back we had before 1997.

Change to energy saving light bulbs, since the bulb was invented their design hasn't changed much & they still lose a lot of energy to heat which is lost as it's not used to heat anything! Australia plans to ban traditional bulbs.

Well if your a famous celebrity, you could stop traveling all over the place in private jets, gas guzzling SUV's, limos and sports cars.

In fact, famous celebrities can have a huge impact by putting their money where their mouth's are, by going green, thus leading us all by example. Celebrities can easily afford to convert their homes to solar power and their cars to bio fuels. They can privately fund and invest in small companies that are trying to perfect green technologies and bio fuel sources. They can promote these companies and the rest of us will follow with our own investment money.

There are a couple of celebrities who are actually making an effort along these lines. Daryl Hannah for one.

So Matt, don't be a hypocrite like the other celebrities. Put your effort and money where your mouth is. Examine everything that Daryl Hannah has done with her eco friendly home in Colorado, and copy her by converting all your homes. Then ditch all the gas guzzling, air polluting modes of transportation you use. Get all of your celebrity pals to do the same, then start a very public campaign showing the world what you are doing. That will inspiring millions of ordinary folk to follow.

I doubt you will however. Chances are you are another hypocrite limosine liberal who does not practice what you preach. I apologize in advance if I am wrong, but you will need to prove me wrong by doing what I suggest.

Accept that the year has a natural seasonal cycle. When it is cold, put more clothes on. When it's hot, take 'em off. Don't buzz around like a blue-arsed fly when it's 38 degrees. Do more when it's chilly. Tailor your lifestyle to the conditions as much as you can, then you won't be burning fuels keeping yourself hot or cool. It's crazy to always want your personal space to be exactly how you want it whatever the temperature is outside. If we carry on like this, there'll only be one season. Sizzling.

Also, buy locally, eat local produce. And don't buy a load of throwaway junk on a whim; better to go home and ponder it over first.

I've been told that ones eyes use 20% of ones energy. I'd check on this.
I consider sunglasses important. Biiterness burns a lot of calories, in my
opinion. The Japanese apparently have one of the highest smokoing rates,
while having the worlds longest longevity. Make of it what you will.

By being aware of wasted resources such as water running while brushing your teeth or shaving, shutting off and unplugging appliances not in use, recycling is very easy once you have places for it in your house like one spot for cardboard, one for newspaper and one for cans and plastic. I also started using cloth bags for food shopping, I hate seeing all the plastic bags flying all around the streets and in trees. I plan to put the energy saving light bulbs in my house (it is on the to do list!) I want to say I had the biggest crush on Matt Dillon when I was younger (still do!) I think he is a great actor! I have seen all his movies! I truly thought I would marry him some day!

Business should consider allowing employees to work 4 days a week. Different employees can work Mon-Thurs or Tues-Friday. Somewhere between 7.5-10 hours per day. Gasoline consumption would be reduced and traffic jams as well.

The quick answer: quit being so wasteful and greedy. People of the US are energy gluttons.

All the rest boils down to:
    Conservation
    Efficiency
    Renewables
    (in that order)

How big is the area that YOU live in? How much space does one person or family need to dwell?
I have no problem with people having big houses, expensive cars and whatever they choose as long as they are not hypocrites. Have you downsized to save energy? If not, why do you expect those who have less than you to sacrifice??

By the increasing the usage fee of electricity, it will create an awareness of how much more they can save using less.

Creating and passing a bill, standardizing fuel efficiency, to ALL automobile manufacturers instead of making it optional.

Have ALL states implement the windmill energy system, to level energy usage.

Make homes (green houses) by using solar panels on the roof construction.

Stop making aerosols for distribution of products and supplies; make it mandatory to eradicate aerosol containers.

Create water restrictions on sprinkler systems, and car washes.

Switch homes to gas over electric in common appliances and for heating and cooling the home (If not all year, at least during the winter seasons).

Don't sleep with a light or television on, try sleep in the dark and with peace and quiet for a change!

Don't leave lights on when no one is in the room. If you are going to be out of the room for more than five minutes, turn off the light, make a sticker or a sign to hang next to the switch that says "Lights Out!" or "Don't Forget!" ;)

Here are three no one else has mentioned yet:

Don't run the water while brushing teeth, rinsing dishes, etc. If your dishwasher won't clean the dishes well enough without prerinsing, fill your sink with just a couple of inches of water to rinse everything in before it goes in the machine.
Or you can use the industrial method of low-water hand-washing by setting up three dishpans of shallow water, adding soap to the first and a small amount of Chlorox to the third. Scrape the dishes well, soap, rinse in the second, dip in the third and airdry on a rack.

Second, dress for the seasons. I'm amazed at the people I see wearing long pants and flannel pajamas in the summer with their AC turned way up, and short-sleeves inside in the winter. Wearing long underwear, turtlenecks and the like inside will allow you to keep that thermostat set appropriately in January. (If you need mittens and jackets inside, you may be overdoing it.)

Third, not the easiest but very effective--move to a smaller place. We have a mindset that bigger is better and that everyone needs their own room, even the cat. I recently moved from 4,000 sf to 1,000 (not by choice at first), and there's not one thing I miss (except my yard). Next move will be to an even smaller place. Think hard about how much of your space you actually use. If you rent, there's no harm trying the smallest size you think will be comfortable and then moving up or down from there. If you're stuck in a really big place, you can close off some rooms, close the vents, windows and so forth, or even rent out space to someone else. Not only will you use less energy in heating, cooling and lighting, but you'll be able to recycle some of your excess furniture, saving in the energy costs of buying new ones for the next person, you'll use fewer cleaning products, you'll save time spent taking care of the space and the possessions filling it, and you'll get to know your family better.

I don't own a dryer, but hang clothes to drip dry on folding racks or on hangers on the shower curtain rod.
