Pig Roast Wedding Reception?

Question

I was talking to my friend the other day, and she asked if my boyfriend and i were going to get married, and i replied someday. Then in a kind of half joke i told her i would want it to be outdoors and have a pig roast bbq catered type event. She told me that it was trashy. I really liked the idea because i am a simple girl. I love to be casual , and dont really feel the need to have everyone get dressed up and be uncomforitable. My idea would be to have everyone come casual, and basically enjoy the music atmosphere, food, and drinks.
Do you think that would be trashy?

I think your friend is a snob and petty and close-minded and a host of other things that are best left off this forum.

I had a big, big barbecue for my wedding reception. Everyone came dressed casual, the 392nd Army Band (I married an Army Bandsman) played dixieland and jazz all afternoon. Dad drove hayrack all over the farm. We had barbecued chicken, about 9 kegs of beer, and everyone was asked to bring a "side dish" in lieu of gifts - which suited the guests just fine. (OK So that part was gauche, but again, it suited our guests just fine - and we truly didn't want people to go into hock with tradidional "gifts.") I guess there were 200-300 people.

Later on, all our bluegrass picking friends played square dances all night long. It was a grand time.

It was a party people are still talking about 25 years later.

So if you want a casual barbecue and not a formal/uptight wedding - plan it that way - but don't invite Miss Uptight-Snob.

It could be absolutely beautiful too - with a sweet, maybe vintage or Edwardian-style dress and a wildflower bouquet -

P.S. I think the entire cost of the reception was less than a thousand dollars - cake and everything.

no, I went to a wedding similar to this (everyone in the wedding party was barefoot and the wedding was outside) All the attendees had a great time

Hell no! Do a hawaii theme and get the grass skirts and stuff. Bring in sand and fake palms.

a Luau is always a lot of fun.

it is what i did and it was anything but trashy, so tell your friend she is just jealous you came up with a simple cheap wedding idea

Depends, outdoor pig-roast sounds fine, if done nice.
In a pavilion banquet table not picnic tables etc...

Trashy would be keged beer and the large red plastic cups or bud in cans.

A real DJ not a pickup truck with the doors and it's radio on load...
Could be a lot of fun!!!!

If that's what makes u happy and pleases u. Then hey, go for it. Never let anyone make u feel bad about what u want to do. It's not her wedding, and tell her if she don't like... when ya'll do decided to get married, her a** don't have to come. That my opinion!!!

Not if that's what you want. My son and daughter-in-law are no frills kind of people too. They got married in a park, surrounded by family and close friends and then had everyone back to their house for a huge cook out in the backyard. It was one of the most fun events I'd ever been to. Everyone was casual and had a great time!

The only thing they insisted on was that no one wear cut-offs or flip-flops!

Look, your wedding is your wedding honey, and people's views are not really that important when it comes to making decisions about your wedding, if that person is a friend then boy you don't need enemies, friends are supposed to be supportive. BBQ's can be done beautifully, in fact I was so inspired by a BBQ I went to that I decided to go that route for my wedding as well. Also my other half is South African and BBQ is a big part of his life, we wanted our wedding to reflect us as a couple so what could be more appropriate. Hog Roasts are fantastic, everyone loves them, and they are great for a fun, casual, relaxed wedding, don't get upset by thoughtless comments, some people have no imagination and think that every wedding should be the same, I say have what you like!!!

A "pig pickin" sounds like lots of fun for a casual wedding reception! I agree with the above poster - you could make it into a luau or fun hawaiian theme.

I hope not, because we're having a clambake! I'm excited to do something that's not just like everyone else and also I am getting tons of positive feedback from friends and family about our plans--they seem very excited about the whole thing! I can't wait!!!! To each their own!

I do not think it is trashy at all. My best friend is having the same when she gets married. It is going to be an outdoor barbecue/pig roast. I find that alot of people are talking about doing pigroasts instead of the "Normal" reception.

no! We had bbq at our reception and everyone LOVED IT...adn it was sooo much more affordable. We had a very formal wedding except for the meal, and I have yet to hear of a complaint. If done right, I think this would be a great idea!

i think its a great idea especially since ours is planned for the weekend of july 14th!!! were doing the pig roast, leg of lamb and all the side dishes. we have a fire pit in our back yard and a im putting a tent up. if your friend thinks its a bad idea dont invite her she will be jealouse when she hears everyone talking about how much fun they had!!

Your friend sounds like the type who likes to 'put on the dog' and pretend that she is something she's not. If you're a casual type and would enjoy this.. go for it! My kids get mad at me because I like going to the pub for dinner instead of a fancy restaurant... but I'm more relaxed there! If you and your boyfriend are in agreement with the pig roast, just do it :)
