In lamen's terms, how does HD Tv work?

I say lamen's terms, but as specific as u can would be great.. its for a physics research paper so anything would be much appreciated.

HD TV stands for high definition television.
basically its providing the user with images and video at a very high resolution...so you'd see a lot more details in the picture..
to fully take advantage of HD TV services, you would need a HD TV set, and a service provider who transmits HD data.(and of course, the necessary decoders and stuff)
