Why is Kobe Bryant's nickname "Black Mamba"?

I read from wiki that kobe's nickname is black mamba - a female marvel heroine. Why is he called this and who gave it to him?

Actually, a "Black Mamba" is the largest venomous snake in Africa, and can be male or female. Claiming that "black mamba" implies female is about as silly as claiming a cobra or horse or a goat is only one gender.

Apparently that was also the nickname for boxer Roger Mayweather (Floyd's uncle).

Kobe gave himself the nickname.

And before the anti-kobe-patrol runs in to jump on that, how many nicknames has Shaq given himself over the years?

As far I know, even revered NBA experts define Kobe as one of the best, if not the best player that has stepped in the game. So I don't think that he's a loser at all. Calling him a loser would be like calling 90% of the NBA players losers. I think he just needs to find players who are physically, emotionally, and mentally intact with him. Shaq's skills complemented well with Kobe's. But their emotional friction gave overwhelmed their potential skills. Basketball is life. You have to get along with the people around you to succeed and reach the pinnacle. Hope the "Black Mamba" finds good players before it's too late. Make the KG trade, Lakers!!!
