Why is Superman unrecognizable as Clark Kent when he only wears a glasses for disguise?

At least Spiderman wears a hood that covers his face. It is an insult to the movie viewers, especially when Clark Kent is working with media people who are supposed to be nosy, but who can't distinguish him as Superman.

It is a whole change in character... not just the glasses.
In the movies it is hard to show that posture and the way you carry yourself dramatically change how people percieve you....

In the comics John Byrne did emphisize that Superman stands very tall and wears a form fitting costume where as Clark Kent slumps slightly and wears clothes slightly larger then he needs.

This is espesally obvious in All Star Superman! Clark And Supes don't even look that similar since Clark, though tall, appears heavy necked and bumbling.

does anyone really give a rat's ***?

Because Its a Damn Comic Book....

In the comics, it was explained that he vibrates slightly at superhuman speed while wearing his glasses to create confusion about his appearance as Clark Kent. Yes, I'm a comic geek, but it is the real answer.

Cos no one would ever think a nerd like Clark Kent could ever be superman. So you automatically overlook him.

Because he was written that way! Duh!

Why doesn't Clark in Smallville wear any glasses? How will he even become Superman without everyone recognizing him?? The show doesn't add up to the movies or comics. Maybe he's going to move to another Daily Planet?

the glasses change his eye color

I believe that Superman/Clark can control with his mind what people see. As Clark he can use the power of suggestion to make people see him as another person. Didn't everyone know that he's telepathic?

why can't you just accept the fact he is a super hero and let it go at that. it's make believe people!!!!!

jimmye, is that true,? that shud shed away the silly thoughts about hem right.

Who is Superman

Becouse everyone looking at his muscle not his face and if he was wearing a mask he would look like a ***

This is a comic book character from over 60 years ago. It's a classic formed from simplicity and doesn't need to be changed.

Chad Koenig

because the man who invented superman must have thought
we are dumb!

I agree it is silly and one of the main weak points of the character's nature. That said, in the comics Superman does everything, well, super. He's a super-actor. He's supposedly the best actor alive and that's how he pulls it off in addition to changing his hairstyle, clothes, & posture.

Because Lois Lane is extremely STOOOOOPID!

wait a minute~ Clark Kent is Superman??? ^+^ keke

I could never understand how he couldn't be recognized with the glasses as Superman, especially around Lois Lane a news reporter who would want to uncover who Clark Kent really is!

Clark Kent does have certain manurisms. He is more accident prone then Superman. So that is how they get away with not giveing away his identity, by giveing them different personalities.

It's make believe. Just enjoy it, there's plenty of real things in the world to anguish over.

DC explained it years ago, while wearing his glasses he projects the image that he wants people to see. He hypnotizes them. As he looks at people when he's Clark Kent, he subconsciously projects to them the image of a frailer, smaller man. So, his glasses are his disguise.

In Superman Returns,Clark Kent = no game, can't talk to Lois without stuttering and looking nervous as hell, Superman = Alpha male, Casanova, real Rico suave smooth talker.

The same reason Hannah Montana just has a wig..it's just make believe

Pathetic to think that after several years of being close co-workers Lois would not know Clark=Superman when she's up in superman's face talking to him, kissing him, and she even slept with him

David Carradine said it best in KILL BILL. Of all the superheroes, only Superman changes INTO an alternate identity. He is Superman and becomes Kent, which no one expects.

Sheer Black -

Yes, in fact that was the funniest episode of "Lois & Clark" by far. I couldn't stop giggling when the time traveler took off and replaced his glasses; taunting Lois by saying, "Superman . . . Clark Kent. Superman . . . Clark Kent . . . "

HILARIOUS!!!!!!

Wait a second here. Let me get this straight. So, you guys are telling me that Clark Kent is actually Superman? WOW! You all have some pretty wild imaginations!!!

Who actually gets a good look at superman's face? Just because everyone knows what superman looks like, doesn't mean everyone knows what Clark Kent looks like. Plus the fact that he does act differently while wearing glasses, he pulls it off quite nicely.

no its impossible....Clark Kent can never be superman!!!
hes a geek....LOL

I used to wear glasses...I switched contacts and went into work the next morning. The receptionist didn't recognize me and yelled "Who the hell is that!?" Then I was arrested for trespassing.

Anyway, it's completely plausible for Superman to be unrecognizable with glasses.

"David Carradine said it best in KILL BILL. Of all the superheroes, only Superman changes INTO an alternate identity. He is Superman and becomes Kent, which no one expects."
HELLO!? Batman, spiderman and more!?

Because he can shift molecular structure by vibrating his facial molecules at hyper speed.

It's the same reason why, in teen movies, that the mousy girl no one noticed becomes a stark-raving beauty when she takes off her glasses. And that answer is: just because, and don't think about the illogic of it, because it makes no sense at all.

They don't make him "unrecognizable", but merely provide the viewer with a reason to suspend their disbelief. Glasses are not a very good diguise, to be sure, but maybe peoples desire for heroes is greater than their desire for truth.

Well thats simple , superman looks almost the same because he wants people who are watching his movies to know that thats him , therefor he looks almost the same to us but completely different to everyone in the movie. Remember he is superman.

Peter Parker becomes Spiderman. Bruce Wayne becomes Batman. They were Parker and Wayne before being heroes. Only Superman starts out as himself and becomes someone else.

Because there´s no reason to assume that Superman even has a secret Identity. If one were given his powers, who would choose to walk amog mankind instead of being always flying? We have the problem of foresight - as we know he has a secret identity, the idea of anyone not recognizing him is obvious.

I've wondered that also.............Oh well if the movies are doing well let them do whatever...

hiding in something in plain sight....that's best way to hide something right where everyone can see it.

Because he is Superman, he can wear glasses and frames that are so heavy and thick they could hide the Empire State Building.

Besides all the correct comments, please do not forget that he is also, accident prone, something Superman's not. And, any real Superman fan knows that Lois Lane is not always convinced there is two different people, she is always suspicious of Clark Kent and Superman's comings and goings.

who the **** cares about that ****!!!!!!!!!
its a ******* tv show.
u ******* low lives asking stupid ***** *** questions

It's amazing to see how much you guys actually care about this. What are you the Legion of Doom or something? Get over it! Superman is a fictional character, not your nemesis. What good will complaining about how lame is "mild mannered" disguise is do you?

Well, lucky neither Clark Kent or Superman goes to the casinos in Vegas. Face recognition software will point him out in 1 sec. You can hide the persona but you can't hide your phsyical features.

People see what they want to see. It may be part of the point the comic character writer's wanted to show all of us through the Superman/Clark Kent personna. Some comics and cartoons have underlying messages too of the age we live in.

I read when Superman put on his glasses.he gives out a subliminal, hypnotic, effect,so when people see him.they see Clark Kent.A weak, timid man..Opposite,of what, they would see in Superman..So glasses are the main ingredient to his disguise

Even though most of us would recognize him, we have to just "take for granted" that this is his disguise, and in his world it works. However, I do like that one guy's explanation of how he vibrates himself at superhuman speed to throw off anyone from identifying him.

As a kid I always assumed that since Superman was from a highly advance planet that the glasses might be more than just glasses, and the changes in attitude, clothing style and aura of confidence all helped to reinforce the illusion.

I always thought it to be an unspoken power much like the jedi mind trick... How nerdy am I?

in a rather older issue, lex luthor invested millions in a face recognition-ish (back in the 80s) computer. this computer deduced that clark kent was superman and lex slapped the head technichan claiming why would superman be clark kent?

Because he's a comic book character who was developed during the 20s - 30s. He is not real, and therefore you should not be judging him using merits of reality.

Because clark kent was a dweeb/dufus and somewhat cowardly...so Lois Lane never could picture him as SUPERMAN! I grew up in the 60's watching george reeves portrayal of superman.. I oughta know!

WTF? Just go to Wikipedia!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman
That will have all of your answers. End of discussion!

The stupidity field, it envelopes the world from anything obvious to the 'normal' people. We know that Superman is Kent, but with the field the fiction world is totally clueless on that fact. Many fiction worlds has the stupidity field.

Who cares. It is a comic book, movie, and a TV show. I wondered about it when I was 5. But as an adult. WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!

The most obvious reason is that if you want to hide something, the best place is in plain sight. Because of the "differences" in Superman and Clark Kent, even when they look he same in appearance, everything about them says they are different.

you do look different with just glasses. also he acts really nerdy so no one would believe that geeky Clark is superman.

Superman is nothing but stupid hero guy!!! you know why?? Where in the heck did you ever see a superhero wears his jockey, brief or underwear whatever you call it after wearing his pants!!! And the worse is its colored red!!! Take note of the yellow belt. Hahahaha

Why don't those snobs who say it doesn't matter just stay away?
Superman is part of my youth and my folk culture.
It is very sophisticated to discuss ancient myths but these snobs put down this Superman talk.

If Clark Kent were vibrating his molecular structure at super speed he would not only be Superman but he would also be SuperHot. You forgot your elementary physics you idiots.

People do not associate to Superman with Clark Kent because as Superman does not cover its face, nobody supposes that it has one double personality. This way with a change of attitude and lenses, she is enough to hide his true identity.

The whole thing about Clark Kent is he is the opposite of Superman...He is nerdy, weak, and clueless when it comes to women...that's why even when people notice the similarities between how Superman and Clark Kent look, they would dismiss it because Clark Kent is so un-superman like...

i like uly b and hjimlet's answers, It's make-believe, make yourself believe

it is because he has magical glasses. end of story.

In the old comic books, Lois and everyone knew that Clark and Superman looked very similar. They were just 2 people who looked the same. That's why Lois was suspicious. Sometimes two different people look the same. Superman spent a lot of time convincing Lois that he and Clark weren't the same.

In one episode Red Kryptonite took away his invulnerabilty. So "Clark" cut himself shaving. He made a special effort to let Lois notice the cut. Superman couldn't cut himself, so Lois was convinced they were two different guys. P.S. The 1960s Superman comics were great and the Superman movies stink.

The Shoveller: Don't start that *again*. Lance Hunt wears glasses. Captain Amazing *doesn't* wear glasses.

Mr. Furious: He takes them off when he transforms.

The Shoveller: That doesn't make any sense, he wouldn't be able to see.

People don't look at other people's faces in large metropolitan cities. Superman didn't have to wear glasses as a disguise. Now if he had worn those red boots as Clark, he would have been history.

because it was made for kids....and seriously, i can't believe this is a topic. we seriously have hug problems as a society....

Does it really matter! it not like its a true story. stop trying to pick out imperfections and just enjoy it after all its entertainmeant its not ment to be taken literally.

It's only a story... all stories take some license. You ruin the fun of it if you look too deep. Just enjoy it.

they sound different if you listen close enough and by the way its easy for city people to not recognize the simplest observations as would people in smaller towns would. so there.

They've also said that no one thinks that he has a secret identity. That he is Superman...all the time.

In the old continuity they said his glasses projected a holgraphic image of a stoop shouldered balding man.At least make yourself look like Pitt or Clooney or Connery or someone.

Because the theme was made way back then. Today it would not be like that. Today it would probaly be different. But you have to leave classic stuff the same. I noticed as the future goes he gets Faster. In the future he will be way faster, I know that Much!

Who cares ? Christopher Reed is dead, and superman along with him.

I somewhat agree but some people are just plainly dumb not to recognize that. Its the way that comics work, for the most part. Everything seems obvious but the characters are made to act differently.

Like jimmye1000 said... as clark kent he make himself mostly unseeable similar to his cousin's ability to become invisible. the difference is invisible no one sees you but yet can be detected and unseeable is everyone just disregards your presence.

who really cares. tons of other shows do the exact same thing. for example hannah montana. seriously i would notice her if she just had a different wig on and no one ever says that they look alike. but it doesnt matter i still watch it.and i still love superman

i just hate it when movies aren't realistic...especially superman.

OK ppl... the real reason that no one can tell Clark Kent is big blue is because (as stated in comics) he has so much control over the muscles in his (and face) that he can manipulate them to portray a different appearance.

cause Clark Kent has the only pair of glasses

When I was growing up, I read Superman comics often. The reason I did was because - are you ready? - IT WAS FUN! It didn't HAVE to be real.

it's a diffrent hair style

Just throw on some glasses, slump, and act nerdy and no one will recognize you. It works! Even reporters who work at a paper that prints your picture every day won't see through it.
Seriously though, it's because characters in DC comics aren't too bright.

They don't reconized Clark as superman becuuse he has super powers of masking his identity. If the media found out they would distort the truth about who he is anyway like ABC, CBS, NBC and the very most CNN. What a bunch of screw ups.

I agree with nobsnob (did I just say that?) I'm not that concerned on this topic neither, which is why I wasn't going to even comment. Why waste time commenting on people wasting time commenting on this topic? Sorta contridictory.

All of this is true but the most important thing is his voice! He talks in a deep commanding voice when he is superman since he has more confidence then. In everyday life he lacks that confidence and speaks much more quietly

In the '40s Superman could completely alter his facial appearance with his "superb muscle control", A few years later, though this preposterous power was discarded,so there you have it,and if you you think I'm not telling the truth Look in the Superman tribute edition of Wizard.

ah, that makes sense, zgundbar. it's all about the "confidence" you set out for people. clark was the timid, introverted guy and superman over compensated his fears/doubts of the timid/introverted side of clark/him (man vs. himself conflict).

so, who was better in bed, clark or superman?

Nobody recognize Superman just because he is Super lucky...

WRONG! Kinda right, but mostly wrong. During the revamp of supes in the early 90's it was revealed, that along side the attitude change, that when Clark was dressed as Superman he also vibrated slightly so that people and cameras could not get a clear view.

Think of a reverse Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Today we try to make it seem like the Hyde is some crazy monster, but in the book people look at him and while he seems familiar the persona is so different they believe they are looking at a different person. Same is true for Big Blue/Clark.

Superman is a character you have to use you imagination. Because of all the special effects you don't need it as much. Imagination let you see the differences between Clark and Superman. With the movies you have to do the same thing, but if you take it on face value forget it!

people cant tell cuz they slow superman got the curl in the front n a lil bigger cuz he stand str8 n Clark just try 2 be nerdy and it really dont work just cuz he got glasses on if he go away superman pops up and we no that girl no who she doin Lana/Louse w/e she no her man

well i use to watch the superman and in one eposide clark kent is saved by a clone of superman........

Well I saw a show that had one of his old friends from smallville came to him in metropolis and new right away that he was superman. She even made funny of the idea that glasses can do anything. So I think the answer is (at least in this show) was that everyone from metropolis is idiots.

also it purberty that change him

I just don't think that they had come up with a clever way to totally change Supermans appearance without confusing the reader on who this character is if they had not read the first or second comic that explained who Clark Kent was.
