During WW2, in Europe, and especially the UK, which was cut off from the rest of the world (a lot of supply was imported from the colonies), people were encouraged to use whatever was available to cook. Potatoes and other root vegetables (such as carrots) were staple foods in the UK at that time - potatoes and carrots are rich in carbs (carbs are sugar) and were extremely useful in those days when sugar was NOT available (in the UK sugar was rationed until serveral years after the war). Carrot cake is also typical of central European countries for the same reasons.

- great info. I would have rated your answer 5 stars but i'm an american and resent you refering to our shipping you everything you needed and bailing you out of wwII as "A lot of supplies was imported from the colonies" Britain hasn't been a major colonial power in 2 centuries
