How will Sanjaya’s continued success on American Idol impact the show’s credibility?

With all of the controversy surrounding Sanjaya’s survival week-to-week, is it too late for American Idol to regain its fans’ trust?

I think it was the judges responsibility to make sure the singers are of a higher caliber that make it to the top 24, no matter what they look like.

um...........huh? i think sanjaya is weird but has a great voice!

I don't think it was a publicity stunt, I just think people felt sorry for him cause he's "cute".
The show may be called "American Idol", but it's a SINGING contest.
But, if we're going to look at the title, let's look at the first word as well, shall we? "American". Hmm.

Besides, the boy can't carry a tune in a bucket.

I think that at the time of the cutoffs, Sanjaya was good enough. I think he may have deserved to be in the top 24, but definitely did not deserve to make it any further. It wasn't the judges' fault.

sanjaya have a nice voice...besida that,,he so handsome!!!!!if i married he,,my children will be so pretty or handsome....hahahaha..........… funny!!!!

Er, Sanjaya has a great voice....

Its already impacted it. The show is becoming a laughingstock.

Can someone tell me why? how? he made the top 24????

The voting system is flawed. America should vote on who they want OFF as opposed to who they want to stay.

Definitely! The show has totally jumped the shark. It isnt about the singing talent anymore, it is a popularity contest for little pre-teens to vote for the cutest boy/girl. I was so dedicated to this show until the last 2 seasons. I gave up on it.... Too Bad, there was some real talent on there for a while.

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuueeeeuuuuuuuu. that's funny. We shall have to see. I bet the producers will vote him off secretly if its not done soon or they will pay and the judges will pee there pants.

I think it is great that the American people are fighting back against the nastiness and humiliation the producers and judges throw at people, esp. during the trials.

I hope Sanjaya wins just to show everyone that we are not going to be as pomp, snobby and users of young people like FOX TV does.

He'll sell more records than Tyler Hicks, I can tell you that for sure

it has already impacted the show. they are sending people WITH TALENT home. So what they are going to be left with is a bunch of no talent people and no competition

I think the one with the most talent will come out the winner - they usually do, at least with Carrie and Kelly. However, it's sad that people will keep him on just to watch the train wreck he offers each week.
Credibility or not, the show will continue it's success simply through teens. They don't know real talent, anyway.

Simon may decide that the only way he'll stay on the show next year is to have the judges vote instead of the public.

I don't think American Idol will lose much of its fan base, but people will lose faith in the show. Most seem to think that keeping Sanjaya on is none more than a publicity stunt. While I think he has talent and potential, he's going about it all the wrong way.

How can anyone believe that show anyways? You have the general public voting when half of the calls are coming in from star struck teens who don't know what true talent is. Then they call multiple times. I don't bother watching that show and never will.

Um...trust? I don't think trust is really an issue. I think most of the controversy lies around how Sanjaya is still on the show. That is where people are getting mad and upset and frustrated. What exactly are American Idol to do about Vote For The Worst and Howard Stern? You're supposed to vote for who you want to win, and that is what is happening and a lot of people are just getting upset. Personally, I feel the show has almost become a joke because of what is going on. The only way I can see situations like this die down is if they limit the voting. Then the same people can't vote over and over again. But until they do do something about how to control the voting and stuff, I think the show is on a downslide after what has been going on.

i think the show is good other than the dazed & confused N'sync backup singer ruining the dang show. Everytime i see the freaking show i watch all the way till he comes on then i see him and turn off the tv. It's getting to the point why i wonder why he is even stepping out on stage. He is a sorry excuse for a human being and I wouldn't be surprised if was mysteriously murdered. Actually i would laugh :) And i miss Gina already... it's all his fault. We need to band together as a country and vote him off. and if we see a teeny bopper with a cell phone, break it immediately.

It was too late last year when The finals were marred by the group www.votefortheworst.com. Lets face it the best singers do not always when the contest. The first year went fine. The second year was a mistake as record sales demonstrate. The third year was a shambles as the final song was a gospel song and lets face it that was stacking the deck in Fantasia's favor. The fourth year you got voted off way too early, shameless suck up though it is the truth, you should have at least been in the final three, and the fifth year was a travesty as the the final pair have no chance of out selling Chris Daughtry who they ironically use as the kiss off song this year "Home". Sanjaya will be gone in four weeks like Kelly Pickler who actually was good looking and could sing some. This boy is so off key and pitchy it is pathetic. I blame Simon for him even being there. They were trying to appease the teen audience by putting him in the final 24 but that was a mistake as was letting Antonella Barba in the final 24 but she was voted out, barely. Add to the computer people the show "American Dreamz" which has a talentlesss boy like Sanjaya and apretty girl like Haley and you would swear this was life imitating fiction. Then howard Stearn jumped into the mess and through his support behind the boy and that is when it got out of hand. Sanjaya has been the topic of television talk show hosts for weeks. He now calls himself "The Sanjaya Universe". I think he is beginning to believe he can win it all. He is William Hung gone a rye. they are trying to regain their credibility with this upcoming celebration show with past talent , hopefully like yourself, shameless suck up again, and Kelly Clarkson but even that may not be enough. When guests like Diana Ross, Qwen Steffani and Tony Bennett don't tell the boy the truth there is a lack of credibility built up there. This is supposed to be a talent competition, singing also, but talent above all else and this guy has the appearance and voice of any high school performer. I don't know if it is possible but you guys who know better need to get in there and at least teach the boy what he is doing wrong so that at least he is learning something. And have somebody, tell paula to stop babying these people. Doolittle needs a hair cut so she looks like she has a neck. Lakisha needs to stop dressing like she feels she has to be sexy to be attractive. The boys just need new wardrobes. Jordin is doing fine so far. And Haley is oozing sex from every pore but she sings like a beauty show contestant instead of like a pop singer. These people need to learn to emote when they sing and stay on the note and one the beat as well. Melinda and Lakisha are semi professionals so they should be perfect at this point. They seem a bit old for this contest but that is neither here nor there. What I guess the show could do is let Simon attack them scathingly and Randy and Paula too. It has to be done. It also would be correct to try and make something out of the people who have been kicked off before they get the chance to go elsewhere and prove the show is a joke at predicting great talent anymore. By the way, while I am buttering you up, shameless suck up yet again, why aren't your albums in the chains like BestBuy? It has been years now and I am tired of them not being there. Get the people to back your albums. I have people who want copies and can't find them except on the internet. Work on that while you are at it.

    PS. Happy Greek Easter.

Not at all. If you look at some of the pop stars out there now, many can barely sing. Sadly, a lot of musicians' success today is based on how you look and how you sell yourself, not on talent.

It's getting the show talked about.
    That's what the producers want.
There's already 1,667 questions about Sanjaya, and that's just from the people that can spell his name correctly.
I typed it into the 'search for questions'.
The show's credibility has never been high.
Not with Paula Abdul as one of the judges.

The show is called American IDOL, not America's Best Singer. It's only appropriate that personal charm should count, too.

    Sanjaya...Sanjaya...Sanjaya.... wow.
He should have been gone weeks ago.
I really think that if he continues to stay on the show, American Idol isnt going to be respected anymore. This is a singing contest.....and he cant sing to the standards of the other singers around him.

I'm outraged! We've had some duds before (Scott Savol, Chicken Little), but never anything like this! I honestly think I could get better reviews from the judges than Sanjaya.

I'm not as interested in the show as I was before, so I guess I feel the show is losing its essence too. Granted, I feel that the purpose of the show is to find good performers, not necessarily ARTISTS (which is very different), but it's still fun to see gifted people put on their best on TV. I don't like Sanjaya's performances for a few reasons, and the saddest part is that he might think he's actually as good as the others.

As for the judges, I think it's a good thing for them to be totally honest. There's no reason to give someone false hope and let them waste their time trying to become something they never will be. They'll find out the hard way eventually, which can be worse.

And as for the girlies who love Sanjaya, look kids, the guy is gay. So move on to somebody who will even CONSIDER going out with you. It's stupid to chase after someone who plays for the other team. And I noticed that there's a lot of thumbs down given to the answers. Yep, some sensitive little Sanjaya girlie fan is offended and wants to show some RAH RAH for her man! :-P ~~STOOPID~~ Yeah, go ahead and give me thumbs down, I don't care, cuz I'm not a straight girl chasing a gay man!

I don't think it will effect the credibility - but I do think it is sad that people would be so ridiculous to follow the directions of Howard Stern to ruin a perfectly good talent show like American Idol. I think they should be able to sue that man for trying to ruin their program. If Sanjaya was a decent person he would just drop out.

it's the public who is keeping him in. especially when you have howard stern and others promoting people who don't deserve to still be in the competition. i don't think it will ruin the credibility but the producers may need to change how much imput the public should continue to have and the judges will need to make sure that only the very best get pass hollywood week b/c they are the ones who make the descion on who makes it into the top 12 not america. i'm sure they are sorry they chose him over his sister.
