Alcohol allergy?

Question

i have seasonal and chronic allergies...currently I take allergy drops (which are similar to having a shot of histimine every week) I've recently noticed that when i drink i get really stuffed up and my throat feels tight...has anyone heard of this? i really dont feel like another round of allergy test...

You can be allergic to alcohol itself or some of the incrediants it's made of. My husband gets a swollen tummy like 6 month pregnant after drinking couple of ordinary beers. He is allergic to barley.

some alcohol beverages cause a friend of mine to have the same reaction. others though, are fine.

It might be a reaction between the allergy drops and the drink, or it could be an allergy to the drink.

I notice it with some wines. a little with beer, but after a few drinks it doesn't matter.

Never heard of this reaction, but it does sound like an allergic one. I'm wondering if it happens with all drinks or with beer (you could be allergic to wheat or barley, etc.) or with wine (maybe the tannins are irritating you). Whatever you do, BE CAREFUL and talk to your doctor.

Yes, alcohol does that to me as well. It is best you stay away from it. Don't worry, it is okay not to drink booze. I quit after 30 years of serious partying and 6 years later, I feel fine and my real friends are still here.

You can be allergic to pretty much anything, alcohol included. When i was little, i could not even take some cough medicines, because they had alcohol in them. My throat would swell, and i would throw up. It went away as i got older, and i dont have a problem with alcohol now. Everyone is different, but it is certainly possilbe to be allergic to alcohol.

I have heard of this, I would go check it out at the doctor....sorry.......but, nobody here at yahoo answers can tell you exactly what you are allergic to. It may be a certain alcohol or a beer, or an ingredent in one of them or both. You can only pinpoint it at the doctor. Good luck, and sorry!

I know two people who were allergic to alcohol, corn, malt, and barley are all products that can be in alcohol. Hence you can have allergies.

One of my friends from high school was allergic to alcohol and he had the same symptoms (and more) you are describing. First, if you want to find out if it is due to the medicine you are taking you can either consult your doctor (recommended) or stop using the medicine for awhile and drink to sii if you are still having the symptoms. The best advice would be just just stop drinking alcoholic beverages. Sorry to hear of your problems :(

I have allergies year round and suffer from the same symptoms as you. I am allergic to the sulfites in wine which causes me to break out in a rash and develop a stuffy nose. Look for a wine without sulfites if you really want a nip. I also have the same problem with beer, but not so much with spirits. You are probably better off just sticking to ginger ale!
