Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Nothing in life is free. The "free" virus programs have spyware attached and will slow your computer down. Buy Norton or some other reputable software. Download the free stuff and be bombarded with spam and pop-ups. Even anti-spyware has spyware attached from the free downloads.

    I use http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivir…

    GesWall freeware
http://www.gentlesecurity.com/index.html also (this is not an antivirus).

GeSWall is intrusion prevention system that is non-intrusive and easy to use. With GeSWall, you can safely surf the web, use e-mail, chat, exchange files etc, regardless of the security threats posed by the Internet. GeSWall is a required supplementary to your anti-virus, anti-spyware and personal firewall as it blocks unknown threats missed by those solutions.

Anti-virus, anti-spyware and personal firewall are particularly good to find and remove known viruses, trojuns and spy-ware. However they fail in front of unknown mal-ware, targeted intrusions and zero-day attacks. GeSWall prevents unknown or missed threats while anti-virus would detect and remove particular mal-ware traces when it is aware of them.

I have used the free AVG programs and It allways told me NO VIRUSES found. I paid for the mcafee and it found 200 viruses, that I knew I had but couldnt get rid of. I know use the free AOL service, which comes with tons of perks, such as free Virus protection, spyware, and a fire wall from mcaffee all free (cost $49.95 a year just to purchase the mcafee, but free with AOL) if you have a high speed internet
