Who is your favorite woman writer?

I'm reading "Trash" by Dorothy Allison. She is one of my favorite women writers. Some of my favorites are Melanie Rae Thon, Barbra Kingsolver, Anne Lamott, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Toni Morrison. Can anyone recommend some lesser known women writers?

I don't know about lesser known, but I adore Dorothy Parker.

She is not lesser known, but I have acquired a fondness for the writings of Sue Monk Kidd. Most excellent!

Morgan Llywelyn; Persia Woolley; Catherine Cookson; Mary Stewart; Marion Zimmer Bradley; Phillipa Gregory; Jacqueline Winspear; Maeve Binchey; Patricia Cornwell; Diana Gabaldon; Suzannah Dunn; Margaret Atwood.
There is a book "Where the Crow Flies" by a really good writer but I can't think of her name.
Oops. The name of the book is actually "Crow Lake".

I agree with the other person, if you haven't read Dorthy Parker...you must. As for lesser know, I recommend:
Jane Mendelsohn (I was Amelia Earhart, Innocence)

For mysteries: Laurie R. King; Laura Lippman

For non-fiction: Sarah Vowell

Daphne Du Maurier - not a lesser known but a master writer - especially "Rebecca" - a must read.

Definitely....Barbara Kingsolver. Beautiful books with stories you really come to care about. Her characters really come to life.

Lorraine Hansberry. She wrote A Raisin in the Sun. And Octavia Butler wrote Kindred. Two outstanding authors and books. And I love that you read Elizabeth Gilbert. The Last American Man is one of my favorites. Go get 'em, Eustace!

Daphne du Maurier....my favorite is "Jamaica Inn".
I also love Ayn Rand's books...."Atlas Shrugged "and "The Fountainhead".
For light reading ,Agatha Christie's whodunits are good ....as are the Gothic romances of Victoria Holt.

Virginia Hamilton is a woman writer whose books have won many
awards, but is not particularly well known. One of her books "House
of Dies Drier" was made into a movie.

Haven Kimmel (her memoirs are particularly good), Alice Sebold, Anne Tyler, Miriam Toews ("A Complicated Kindness" is wonderful), Alice Munro.
