The theme of Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid is about the loss of childhood of Annie; from the paradise of home, to the "real' - somewhat - unpleasant life that was waiting for her in the outside world.

The quote that reflects the theme is:

" I could not be sure for the rest of my life , I would be able to tell whether it was really my mother and when it was really her shadow standing between me and the rest of the world." (p.107 of the book)
