What does mean by "bordering on being not normal"?
Earthworms are not normal OR He is not normal for having a passion for earthworms?

It means that he is normal, but only because he may have a good reason for liking earthworms so much. I take it he is profiting off them or using them for research. If this is the case then he is justified in his passion of earthworms.
