What is your best advice for a single black female seeking an solid career choice?

I am a single black female, who is 36 years old, & at the present time working a commmon laborer occupation, (janitorial). This position seems to have me locked into it due to the medical benefits, & somewhat flimsly job security. I so desperately want to find a more suitable position, but cannot seem to settle on a choice. I am leaning toward an occupation that is clerical, but I want it to be challenging & rewarding.
I am somewhat of a late bloomer in life regarding a solid career, but i would really like some input from those who are knowledgeable in this said matter. I just recently finised my GED & have taken advantage of the many programs, (computers), Word, (certificate#1). In the process of completing, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, etc... Although I work nights, 6 days a week, I do whatever I can in my sparetime to futher my education. If anyone also knows of any weekend courses, I would much appreciate the information, also regarding info on school supplies.

I really cant give you a job choice, but i would like to tell you to keep a positive outlook and dont give up. People like JAMIE dont and never will understand the struggle you endure because its people like her giving it to you. Have you ever thought of running your own daycare? Becoming a nurse? Banker? These are challenging jobs. Times are hard now, so having a "solid" career is not guaranteed to anyone, so continue to move forward and in the meantime pray for endurance. That is what you need. Sometimes our situation cant change but we can endure the situation we are in. I wish you well.

Your marital status and the colour of your skin have no bearing on what you want to do with your life. Do you think there are jobs that are better suited to blacks than whites? Who is the racist now?

Don't give up. I have been working in law firms for about 12 years now and I can tell you with a good work record and if you can use MS Word and are relatively comfortable with a computer, you should apply for a job at a law firm in the file room or in the mail room. Its a good starting point and you have all these lawyers to ask questions of and to get networking connections After a year, you can either try to move up in the firm or try a better position in another firm. Most attorneys will write you a recommendation letter or give you a good reference. Even if its not your style, its still an easy place to start and learn about office work and who knows where you can end up with a little hard work! Pick and choose which field of law would interest you (I work in Patents and Trademarks) and go from there, do not be afraid, you can do it! In 5 years I doubled my salary and 10 years later I am almost at quadruple from where I started and basically can work anywhere I want.

    Good Luck.

And if anyone puts a hateful response on here, ignore it, keep pushing forward, its not easy, but its the right thing to do and you can do it!!!!
