one or the other may seem stronger or work better on different people. xanax is easier to get addicted to than ativan though, but using ativan for 12 years is a long time. you may want to talk to your doctor about switching to xanax just because it will be different for your body which may be built up a tolerance to the ativan.

i am just wondering how many mg do you take of ativan when you need it after taking it for 12 years?

hi well i use to take 1mg, but now im taking only 0.5 mg, its funny how they try to take you off these addicting pills when they been giving them to you for so long, anyways thank you all for the answers.
Xanax has done wonders for me. I can think way clearer with out all of the anxiety in the way. I keep having people tell me about the addiction part, however, most of them have NEVER had a panic attack or had severe anxiety.

Lorazepam and Xanax are both benzopdiazepines. They work in very similar manner. Xanax has a shorter half-life. Neither is "stronger" per sae.

How about trying to get off the medications completely? Do you have a counselor that can work with you to find alternative ways to deal with your anxiety? There are a couple of studies that have show that regular exercise can be as effective as medications for mild-to-moderate anxiety and depression.

People may respond differently to different medications, and the only way to find out is to try to the other medicine. Both of these drugs are benzodiazepines, so they have the same effect on your body. But no one could honestly say that they will work the exact same in your body because every drug has different properties (protein binding, elimination mechanisms, etc.). Benzos are usually extremely difficult to come off of, especially after taking them for such a long time, so please don't do this without consulting your doctor.
