Anyone ever read "Bastard Out of Carolina" by Dorothy Allison?

This is one of my all time favorite books and I just wanted to know how many others had read it and their thoughts on it--and any other books they could recommend.

This is an excellent work (although, imho, *Trash* was even better). I thought it did an amazing job exploring the intersections of the experiences of childhood, race, poverty, rural life, and emergent lesbian identity. Everything is sort of thrown together in this tragic cauldron and melted down. I really was impressed by it.

No, but I saw the movie, it was one of those made-for-T.V. flicks. To be honest, I didn't even know it was a book, but now that I do, I'll have to go and pick it up, or check it out of the library because I really liked the movie. That's the one where the girl's name is "Bean" I think right?

That book was so eye-opening to me! Thanks for reminding me of that book, I haven't read it since I was 16, I'll have to read it again.

Wow i loved that book, it has been a few years since i have read it...sadly i loaned it out and it was never returned....what a emotional book that covered many thing poverty,growing up in the south and abuse just to name a few! Have you read "Two or Three Things i Know for Sure" or "Trash" also by Allison? Both are excellent books!
