It depends on what drug it was and what type of test is being administered. Different drugs remain in different parts of your system for different periods of time. Many drugs can be detected in your hair from the time of usage until the hair falls out or is shaved off. Drugs may be detected in the blood stream or urine for only a few days or for a month or more.
However, if the drug you used is not illegal, or you can show that you had a perscription for it, it should not be a problem for it to show up in your screening. If that is the case, and you know that you're going to test positive for it, you might as well disclose that immediately. Something along the lines of, "I broke my hand on Sunday and was given a perscription for Vicodin, which I took that day."
