If you were given $1,000 to change the life of a perfect stranger, what would you do?

Additional Details

You may have heard about the concept of paying it forward -- the idea of doing something meaningful to help someone else without asking for anything in return. So, if you were given $1,000 with the understanding that it had to be used to help others, how would you use the money and why?

To see how others turned these endless possibilities into amazing results, watch Monday's "Oprah" (check local listings for airtimes or go to http://www.oprah.com/ for more information).

I would find a sad and lonely person who was also very pessimistic and pay for an experience where they can help others in the hope that they will find that giving of yourself can be a great present to yourself as well as the person who is helped.

I would take this stranger to a children's hospital ward with board games and other interactive fun games so that they can interact with the sick children and see how happy they are when they have new people spending time with them and taking their mind's off their illness.

The stranger will see that their life isn't so bad and every time they feel themselves getting sad or pessimistic they can remember how happy they made these sick children. With any luck, the stranger would continue to see the sick children.

Good deeds are often contagious and when others find out about what you are doing it can encourage others to do the same. The more we get out there and help others, the better off we will all be. It can even be something very small - for example, I was once driving over the Harbour Bridge and went to pay the toll and was told that the person in front had paid mine as well and wished me a happy day. I, of course, paid someone else's toll another day. This chain reaction of good deeds hopefully is still happening!

Hi Oprah,

I hope that you have read all the answers and I also hope to see more questions from you. Congratulations LaMariposa. Report Abuse
Who else is irritated with Oprah for letting the question go to a vote. Sorry I took the time to answer- obviously, only the first 100 or so even had a shot at getting their's read... Report Abuse
Those who would really do something worth while to make a difference, I say keep doing what you can. It's us poor & middle class that have the biggest hearts.
Oprah could give us the thousand without blinking an eye, but none of our great ideas will ever see any of her money! Report Abuse
I agree with life'sgreat comment. I knowOprah doesn't have the time to personally read all the comments AND was probably asked to submit a question to YAHOO ANSWERS by it's staff. I bet the last several thousand answers were never read by ANYONE other than maybe the ones that posted them.
...jj Report Abuse
I don't know about you, but I read the answers in many different ways before I voted for the best one. I read from newest to oldest, oldest to newest, and from rated highest to lowest. That way, I got a good representation of the answers.

I think this answer was great! :) Report Abuse
Congrats LaMaripos...
but putting a question with such amount of answers in voting is nothing but _____ity... Report Abuse
37197 answers thats a record
way to go Oprah! Report Abuse
How is 14% a majority for this answer? I must be missing something with how that is determined.. Report Abuse
Over 37000 responded and Oprah (or her publicist or whoever thought of the question) couldn't even be bothered to pick a best answer.
I do like the best answer though. Report Abuse
A question with over 37000 answers only received about 200 votes. It seems that nearly everyone ignored the vote after they answered the question. Report Abuse
Also, with so many answers, there should be some sort of search capability to find (or mask out) key words, or an answer by a specific user. Report Abuse
U R all too grumpy~

Go do something NICE for the SAKE of SoMeOnE else for punishment (c:

It really feels great to do, in fact why not dedicate some time or money to YOUR idea you gave Oprah? I a sure she was hoping people would take initiative to do so. Report Abuse
I would make a money tree and present it to a perfect stranger so that they can spend it as they need to spend it. Or they can spend it all at once. Only they know what their needs are. If by chance I give it to a stranger who doesn't need it, I would hope they would pass it on to someone else. Report Abuse
Yes i agree ppl who answer should at least get the decency of the asker taking the time to choose a best answer,it's rude lazy and ungrateful. Report Abuse
Tho, I had more vote than you, It got deleted when people started fighting over best positions. & Due to this injustice, ANSWERMAN is Gone! Bye bye! Report Abuse
They had no intention of selecting a best answer when they posted this question. They made US a FOOL. made everyone a fool by thinking THE Oprah would actually check this out? and waste time? Come on!

Good Bye Yahooooooo! Answers. AnswerMan had enough. Report Abuse
I have emailed the yahoo answers team, & received a reply too once. This is just not fair. If mine was deleted, tho THE AnswerMan had a clean record, think of all those people who also had to suffer. Report Abuse
No need to say anything here people. NOBODY other than WE who waste time on y!answers is gonna read it! The yahoo team, and angel network has better things to do. Report Abuse
Answerman is correct! Y!Answers caved in to the "big Names" and we little people are on the bottom. That's OK good company here. Report Abuse
GOD LOVES ALL PEOPLE EQUALLY! Report Abuse
I actually thought of answering the question, but then what difference would that make?
But just in case you have money to spare .... buy lunch and give it to a homeless person. Report Abuse
BRAVO tetyana. I wish it had occurred to me. Report Abuse
Hey Oprah, I just wanted to let you know how much of an inspiration you are to me! Your such a wonderful person=]
Could you please put some more questions up??!!
Thx Oprah! Report Abuse
I would go to Africa and use that $1000 to pay for a 2 year college tuition for one smart student to be educated. Report Abuse
Really it works . Good luck Miss Oprah. i think its enough. Report Abuse
Do you actually think Oprah went onto the internet and read this? Do you even think she has an account with Yahoo? I doubt it. Oprah's publicist was probably asked by Yahoo Answers for permission to do this. I don't think Oprah sat down to type this question. Report Abuse
What would have made it good, is if Oprah had actually read through the answers (although she probably doesn't have time to read past page 3) and pick a best answer, with a comment. People would like that. But they let it go to voting. Report Abuse
Yahoo probably faxed the question and answers to one of Oprah's staff, and they probably dumped into the garbage bin. Report Abuse
To those of you who whine; There is greater suffering in this world than yours, go do something about it. Maybe then you'll understand, the real answer to this question lies in what WE DO in response to it. Report Abuse
Great best answer!!!! Report Abuse
You do realize by getting involved with Yahoo Answers your credibility took a hit? Just say you're sorry in public, cry a little and go to rehab and you'll be more popular than ever. Report Abuse
Why don't you get a gift certificate for Tom Cruise to attend the Ann Coulter School of Charm-heck what am I thinking-he could probably teach. Report Abuse
Bamma say Oprah never come back to Yahoo. Bamma say you people just a bunch of meanies. Bamma say why you treat her like this. Bamma say read between lines. Bamma say she have big surprise in store. Bamma otta know. Report Abuse
I wonder if Oprah knows that a question asked by her exists on Yahoo! Answers Report Abuse
...not that it's a bad question... Report Abuse
I think this question was asked to get people to thinking of something they would do, it was never about getting the money or getting the best answer, it is to make us all think of what we could be doing daily to make this a better place for all of us to live. Report Abuse
The question was lame and so was the winning answer! I couldn't even find my answer!!! We all know what we would really do... buy a homeless person a hamburger and pocket the rest! >:) Report Abuse
I would give the money to a child at St Judes Hospital. Or I wuold buy a cow and send it to a starving family in africa. Report Abuse
Oprah Winfrey Sucks Horse C0CK Report Abuse
What's the point in these 'celeb' questions if they're simply going to be left to voting? If a celeb asks a question, then they should at least follow through and pick an answer. Report Abuse
What a pile of pants. Report Abuse
no its not. some dude in angel network just had to email another dude in yahoo. thank you for making us a fool. and thank you for letting me make up my mind and leave yahoo answers for good. Report Abuse
Oprah u r so cool but why didn't u pick my answer on ur own? Report Abuse
Oprah is in it for herself she probably never read the question but i will say the producer told her to do this. Oprah should give without telling the world that what God expects. Report Abuse
I would say you all missed the point I would say that any one who has a job could put away at least 10 dollars a month and then give it to some one in need just thighten your own belt a little put a side a little money every day or on pay day and give it to some one in need Report Abuse
yes 10 a month is only 120.00 but many could do much more that was just a idea for some one on lower income like i was last month and now I am out of work I was making 6.95 an hour but when I get a job again I am going to do that so next year at this time I can bless some one else!!!! Report Abuse
and maybe next year I can put aside 100 a month instead an so on if I had 1000 even tho I have needs to I would still give it to some one worse off than me cause God would bless me back even more then you can't out give God Report Abuse
so stop whining and give to some one in need like the poor woman at my hubby's work place her and her two girls lost everything in a house fire all they had was the closthes on there back Report Abuse
I went tho all my stuff and gave her 3 boxes of stuff for her and her kids I had so much but no money but I still gave what I had! I did noy even have money to spent for christmas but I gave what I had that she needed Report Abuse
this is the reason for the season give too those less bless than us! Report Abuse
So what!

Move on people!

Oprah just needed some fresh ideas to spark up on her show!

It takes the community to do this for her when she normally pays through the nose for this info.

Good onya! You've just feuled her for the next 10 years... Report Abuse
How could you all vote that way, and how could Oprah let that vote go to a stupid vote? And is this really Oprah?? Report Abuse
Don't allow "celebraties" to post questions if they aren't going to take the time to read and vote for answers. Over 37,000 took the time to write something and none of it and none of these comments have been read by her. I just needed to vent this! Report Abuse
i would change a homeless person life and pay a month to live in a apartment and buy food for him/her Report Abuse
by the way all who thought of the homeless..I work with them daily and giving food, water bottles, backpack, warm socks, is cheap and makes a huge difference, much less $ than 1000. Each of us is powerful and wonderful. skybuffalo Report Abuse
be quiet answerman!! Report Abuse
Fantastic answer. I agree 100 percent. Been there done that.

I can't believe the ridiculous comments people make thinking that Oprah will actually read this. I am just happy that yours, La Mariposa, made it to her ears. Report Abuse
I'll take a homeless lady to most expensive dinner in New York City and make her feel like the most famous and wealthiest women just for that night Report Abuse
Try Dizzay today!

I would donate the money to a sick kids hospital, that way I would help all sorts of children, and even though I dont no them,I no I did something good. Report Abuse
I am trying to decide if I still like Oprah. Report Abuse
Check this out: http://home.earthlink.net/~people-of-courage/ that was a good answer you picked. Now tell help me tell the truth on your show! That would make me happy. Report Abuse
A thousand dollars is not alot of money anymore but I would find a way to get him or her into some career training. I think that is the fastest path to getting back on track

http://www.verdispoetry.com Report Abuse
I'm pretty sure the answer is biased and the results are skewed greatly. Did Oprah herself even care about the answers?! 37000+ answers and I doubt anything past page two was looked at. F*** that. Report Abuse
A thousand dollars to a perfect stranger...Sorry but in this bubble called REALITY, that isn't possible ? With all the money you make, Oprah why don't you start giving away your hard earned cash! lol Report Abuse
i hope you read this. you can have all the money in the world if it goes to your head and yougo crazy u might as well have nothing -cosmoguy2121 Report Abuse
Actually, I could not take the money to help a perfect stranger. Today, a perfect stranger could be the perfect perpetrator. Unfortunately, $1,000 do not go far these days, but I would give it to help those I know suffering hardships though no fault of their own. Report Abuse
I'm glad someone gave a thoughtful answer. That said, the celebrities that pander to the YA audience are disgusting, and Oprah stands near the top of that heap. Report Abuse
my balls are itchy Report Abuse
whoa. The comments go on forever.
I still love you oprah!
I should have been best answer though....... Report Abuse
I love you Oprah you have changed my world please make more questions so i can answer them Report Abuse
Whats great about your answer is it wouldn't even take a $1 to accomplish that. Great idea that you should actually do. Report Abuse
I would go to a homeless location and ask them if they would accept tents certain type foods and necessities. If feasible I would go to Sam's Club and buy some tents certain cooked foods that will sustain people for a long period of time and necessities.== $1000 is'nt much Report Abuse
You do not need money to do something nice. Babysitting a single mothers kids for free would go MUCH farther, and mean so much more than paying an overpriced daycare center the $1,000. Report Abuse
depends on their needs, a homeless person i would help them spend the money on getting a job and an temp place to live then build on that to getting them into a house of their own. a sick person, the medical attention they need, a kid, toys or books, etc. i wouldn't buy an ipod for someone. Report Abuse
I would help the homeless:) Report Abuse
I would help the homeless Report Abuse
I liked the best answer choosen. Made a very good point! When driving people let me out and i return the favour by letting the next person out.(someone at junction waiting to leave) Report Abuse
I would educate a person, not for the purpose of employment, something they are interested in and would enjoy life more. Many people educate themselves for employment, which is great but truly intelligent people educate themselves just for the sake of learning.
Thank You Report Abuse
I completly agree with people who answered...
oprah you are a very smart women, hope to find a new qustio for you soon. Report Abuse
I think this answer was terrible. The question was, what would you spend the $1000 on to help someone. And taking one guy to a childrens hospital costs what? $20 in gas? and maybe $100 in board games to take with you. What the other $880? there were better answers than this. Report Abuse
I think that changing someone else's life for the better is a great thing in life, if given the opportunity I would find someone who really needs a pick me up or someone who is struggling through life's hardest battles, cancer, drug abuse, etc. and then determine what needs to be done to help them!! Report Abuse
i would give it to an organization that helps to provide food for children and families. and by the way we love you Oprah Report Abuse
Hey Oprah. i am a huge fan. please please e-mail at disney98710@yahoo.com and if you can't i understand i mean you are a busy women.i bet i would lucky if you even had time to read this. but if you are reading this then you rock. you are an inspiration to all the women around the world. You Rock. Hey Oprah you are such a testimony of Gods great work and plans for us and I know you are bless not just because of you work but the great pure heart of giving you have. Thank you for PUSHING you way through success and not being the stereotype. Thank you for remaining humble. Oprah you da DoM! :) Report Abuse
HI Oprah i love your show and i am 11 years old i have watched alot of your shows and i have been on your website 1 million times it must be hard reading all of your comments and answers you are famous and you can tell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!… Report Abuse
Oprah is the strangest looking person I have ever seen... Report Abuse
i would give it to them its not mine to keep share the wealth and you will be bleesed for a long time pass it around and live long Report Abuse
will my comment be displayed? Report Abuse

I would either take a single mother out for a pamper day and wardrobe update because the person I am thinking of only does things for the kids and never anything for herself. In an effort to help her feel better about herself, improvements to the outer house would help and I know it will be years before she could do it for herself. Otherwise, I would use it for someone who could not afford to go to a doctor and receive a thorough examination from head to toe to make sure all health needs are being addressed and if any money left, I would try to buy necessary medications or put that person in touch with agencies that could assist. Lastly, plan C would be to buy as many overcoats for needy children in my area as possible.

I would simply put the money back into the lives of my students. I teach 6th grade special education in a low-poverty school. I know many of my students do not have simple necessities. I want them to know someone cares about them. If I had to pick one student, it would be my student Dylan. Dylan and his mom and baby brother have been in and out of a shelter. Even with this obstacle, Dylan still has a fantastic outlook on life and makes me smile and laugh every single day. I know that whatever I would do for him he would truly appreciate and he is more than deserving.

I would give the needy people money(gift cards) so people especially single parents are able to buy their children gifts. I would also help out the local food pantry because i know they are struggling for food at this time of year. I would also help send the troops overseas food for the holidays. i may even send some to the local churches. i would also if i had enough money give the local children's hospital funds to help them for the holidays

Maybe travel to see someone dear, to an old hometown. Depending on the persons situation would lie the true answer. It would be something that they would remember for the rest of their life......maybe meeting Oprah......maybe riding a train......mostly taking the time to give them something special.

There are so many things I would want to do. I am a cancer survivor. I know that when I go for check ups at MD Anderson in Houston that there are children who either have sick parents or are sick themselves. My heart grieves for the babies. I would know parents stay by their kids sides and do not have time to Christmas shop. I would love to be able to provide those families with some gifts and joy during the holiday season. There are SO many sick kids at MD Anderson, the Children's hospital as well as every NICU in town. I would love to bless those families. There are families I know that could really use $1,000. They need furniture, food, a car. I know a single dad who is raising 2 children. They have nothing. The kids do not have clothes that fit. They do not have toys. Mattresses are on the floor. They do not have a car. They walk everywhere they need to go (the closest store is walgreens and it is close to 1/2 mile away). The closest grocery store is a few miles away. Their lives would be dramatically improved if they had a car. Their father would be able to work more. I wish I could do more for these families.

Well I will go to a stranger tell him the story and from then on go to double the people and tell then. It will eventually double every person. Together we will go to St. Jude's hospital and together go and donate the money to some child in need. Together we will say. Together as a whole we come to help one of us in need. It would be so wonderful. St.Judes Hospital needs our help it is so sad to see a infant suffering from cancer. Like in the commercials say those of us with healthy children give thanks, but those unfortunate ones let's help them.

I will spend the 3 days with her or him. See and feel how she or he lives a day without $1000 and on a day with $1000. I want to know what money could do to make a person happy in real world.
What is the ultimate satisfaction that money can make.
What will be my feelings, my reaction. Maybe it depends on a person that will receive it. How will affect my life. How will a day with $1000 will make one life so different from mine. Maybe it will tell me life is so beautiful that I have to wake up each morning and embrace what I have, be thankful to what I can reach and look forward to what lies ahead. Maybe the money will benefit the stranger we pick but the joy of giving will ease the pain of my griefing heart and mind.

I would donate the $1,000 to our local "Shop with a Cop" organization. Our local police force with the help of our community work to collect money to take children on a Christmas shopping spree. Our police officers donate their time and their own money too. I work at Covington Elementary school and I am fortunate enough to get to see first hand how this makes a difference with these children. To see the police (in their uniforms) and the wonderful volunteers come to our school and pick up the children is a delight but what is more exciting is to see them return with their bounty and to hear the stories from the volunteers. More than once, I have seen them tear up as they recount a particular story. So many times, these children, while they are excited about shopping for themselves, are also so worried about others they know that need things. It is not uncommon for them to come home with boots or a winter coat for a cousin or sibling in need. I donate to "Shop with a Cop" every year. $1,000 extra would help them take several more children along on this trip. It would be a wonderful way to spend it.

    1) I would select the person based on specific needs and not perceptions, using a Q/A spreadsheet with weighted scoring criteria.
    2) I would need to have a pool of perspective recipients in order to make the selection. This would allow for proper identification of that person.
    3) After selection, I would then develop a list of needs/wants based on the selected persons input.
    4) Together we would prioritize the list and make some sound decisions as to what would help change their life versus what would just be a short term improvement or a want not a need.
    5) In order for this to be somewhat of a surprise, I would have multiple choices to select from that would accomplish the goal, but also surprise the person selected.
    6) Continue to work with the person to assure they reach whatever goal they had set for themselves and keep a relationship with them.
    7) Make a deal with them, that if you help them attain whatever goal they set for themselves, that they pass it on 10 fold.

$1000 could help someone in a time of need but this particular question is how would I use it to CHANGE the life of a perfect stranger. Changing someone's life is far more long term than helping someone temporarily by buying them a WalMart gift card. I would probably look for someone that has a business idea and buy them the LLC, fax, phone, business cards, etc. I think that would probably help someone to a great start offsetting the initial expenses of business startup. I know, it's not merchandise or retail space but it's a start and I think it would be the best way to help CHANGE someone's life.

Uh...at least I know it would change my life! :o)

If I were given $1,000 to help a perfect stranger, I would pick someone with a disability that can't afford life improvements. Many individuals have trouble doing day-to-day activities because they cannot walk or see or hear. For somebody with a walking disability, $1,000 could buy them a new wheelchair or could pay for ramps to be installed around their living quarters. For somebody who cannot see, $1,000 could pay for a class to train them on how to live effectively. For someone who cannot hear or has trouble hearing, $1,000 could buy them a state-of-the-art hearing device. These are the types of people that could most benefit from $1,000, the ones that cannot afford proper health care in an ever increasingly expensive world.

Oprah, I am one person that does not like to do things for self recognition. If I had a thousand dollars to change a life of a perfect stranger, I would go out and purchase a thousand dollars worth of gift cards from Lowes and Home Depot and donate them through my church to our Katrina program to help the rebuilding of peoples homes in New Orleans.

I think of the food bank first of all, that could touch several people. ($500.00)
Next, I would like to give $500.00 of it to help someone to be certified in 4 areas that allow that person work a certain job. (The oil workers in Alberta Canada.) Like one where they needed their H2S, CPR, WHMIS, TDG...ETC.

I WOULD CHANGE THE $1000 INTO ONE DOLLAR BILLS AND PASTE A SMILE ONTO EACH BILL. THE SMILE FROM ANYONE IS THE MOST WONDERFUL GIFT YOU CAN GIVE. "WHEN YOU SEE SOMEONE WITHOUT A SMILE, GIVE THEM ONE OF YOURS" A SMILE CAN CHANGE AS LIFE

Being that I live in a city (not major) like most where there is a lot of poverty, homeless and needy, I would take the money and find someone who I see often that's always hungry or in need of a nice warm bath, fresh clean clothes, and somewhere to stay and would make their day by taking them somewhere to get something to eat, buy some decent clothes to wear, take them somewhere to take a nice long bath or shower, whatever they choose, get them a room in a hotel for a few days , a couple weeks, whatever. As far as if there is anything being left , I would just hand that over to them because since I can't do this for a long time and the money can only go so far, and after time they will be back in the same spot where they were found, at least they could eat a few more good meals before they go back to what they know or should I say the situation they were in.

There are many charitys that could benefit from a thousand dollars and be put to good use. Although what I would do with a thousand dollars is to start in my small little town. Everyday even though I live in a small town I see people that are less fortunate than I am. Even if I cant help that person I always ask God to bless them in some way that day. It has always been my dream that if I had plenty of money I would pick one person each day to bless. So, if I had the extra thousand I would do just that and help people in my small town. I would ask them what their biggest needs for that day were. Oprah it is so awesome what you have done in the past and are still doing to help people. I think that is why God blesses you like he does.

I've been involved as a volunteer in a program called Discovery! for the past year. The program was originally run by Dr. Phil McGraw and his father and continues to this day to change peoples lives. My husband and I have paid for a few people to experience this life changing event and our time and money have given us more than we could have imagined. I myself have been profoundly and forever changed.

I would use the money to send someone to Discovery! in Plano, TX

I would match the $1000 and pay mortgage payment/rent for people in the local Converse County Memorial Hospital on Christmas Day until the money ran out.

I would go to Skid Row in any city and find one person who needed to have a lifelift that day. I'd then ask that person to help find nine other persons who needed a lifelift that day. I'd give each person including the original person $100 for that day. Not only would the life of one person be changed, but ten others (including me) having the opportunity to share a blessing that day.

It depends on the situation of the individual. For example, if the person was a college student, I would make certain that their books were paid for that semester.

If it were a family in need, I would make certain that they had food to eat, and pay their bills.
