Metformin: Side effects usually happen in the first week of treatment and are usually mild and will go away after you have taken the medicatioin for a while. Abdominal bloating, diarrhea, gas, loss of appetite, metallic or unpleasant taste, nausea, vomiting are some of the common side effects. Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is not a usual side effect, unless you also suffer from kidney, liver, adrenal gland disease. Lactic acidosis is the major serious side effect in some people, which is rare but can be fatal and usually happens in people with kidney or liver disease. Feeling very weak, tired or uncomfortable, cold, dizzy, or light-headed, increased sleepiness, muscle pain, slow or irregular heartbeat, trouble breathing, or unexpected or unusual stomach discomfort are the symptoms of lactic acidosis. If these symptoms occur, stop taking the glucophage and notify your doctor immediately or go to the ER.
Glipizide: side effects are rare and seldom require discontinuation of the medication and include: constipation or diarrhea, drowsiness, gas or hives, itching, low blood sugar, sensitivity to light and skin rash and eruptions and stomach pain.
