How does Limewire work?

OK, I downloaded Limewire, then found a song I want to hear. Downloaded it. My Windows media Player popped up. I clicked play, and no music, but a lot of ads kept popping up. What gives?

Limewire is a file sharing service. In a nutshell, this is how it works: when you install Limewire, you designate a folder for your downloaded and shared files to be stored. Limewire will check this folder, and publish a list of the files in this folder to the Limewire network, so that if anyone logged in to Limewire wants, they can then download the files to their own computer.

When you search for a file (song, video, etc.), you are searching Limewire's database for that song to be in someone's shared folder on their computer. When you download the file, Limewire transfers the file from their hard drive to yours over the internet.

Now, the real problem is the one you are experiencing... people out ther "mask" their malicious or misrepresented files as legitimate files to get people to download. These files can contain viruses, spyware, and other forms of malicious content. Be very cautious when using any peer-to-peer sharing services.

Hope this helps!

Asker's Comment:
Thanks. Limeware really is bad. I do not intend to burn copyrighted material. I am seeking music that is in public domain. I believe that there are a lot from the 40's and 50's that fall into that category. As well as old American folk songs.
