Is trazodone(desyrel) worth taking for anxiety and sleep problems?

I suffer from extreme anxiety and depression. I used to stay worried, nauseated and tired. I am taking zoloft which has eliminated the nausea which is great but I still get sudden anxiety attacks . You know the gut wrenching ,tightness, and fever type. I also cannot sleep at all .I cannot get my head to stop or slow down . It is constantly thinking. Any help would be appreciated . Any new meds maybe I havent tried .

    Getting good sleep is important for anxiety and depression. Trazedone before bedtime can help you sleep. It's not habit forming.

    The other thing to try is exercise. It can be as simple as a long walk each day. That will relax you. Try taking a walk with your favorite music playing on your iPod.

    Make sure you have someone to talk to. Your problem is not unusual.

    Trazodone is often used in conjunction with other antidepressants when those drugs cause sleep problems. I took Zoloft in combination with Trazodone for a while and it helped me sleeped. I've never heard of Trazodone being used as an anti-anxiety medication, though.

    I take trazodone and have for 15 years but the milligrams are high--250 to 300 each night . It really makes you sleep good and works very well for me for depression and anxiety. Smaller doses might work for you but your doctor would have to help you with that. Wouldn't it be horrible if our brain didn't think , yet I know at times we wish it would just shut up and give us some rest . the trazodone will help with that also. good luck!!

    I know several people who take trazadone to sleep...one takes only 50 mg.....another takes 150mg... and my brother needs 200 mg. to sleep at all.....it is not addictive...try it.....didn't work for me, but I have other options as I don't get addicted to drugs, etc.

    Source(s):

    The reason you need a psychiatrist to prescribe as there are many anti anxiety meds, but most are considered addictive...like ativan or lorazapam, or klonipin or clonazapam...(I have taken this one for 15 years)

    Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
    problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
    daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
    cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
    for getting sleep.
