My ao smith water heater model # FPSH 40 250 ignites then goes right out?

hi there
first i have to ask you a question,is your hot water heater spark igniton or a standing pilot model?
if it is spark ignition the gas control valve may be shot,if it is a standing pilot you may just either need to clean or replace the thermocouple,either way i would call a heating and cooling professional
