What is a stockinette stitch in knitting?

Stockinette looks like V's when you look at it, it's flat and smooth. If you are knitting in the round you would knit every stitch on every round (row). If you are knitting flat you would knit all the stitches across one row and on the next row you would purl all the stitches to the end. Knit on RS or public side, purl on WS.
