What are some ways to fix a creaky bed?

My bed is very squeaky and creaky. The matress used to lie on a box spring (or whatever you call it) but I took it out and that made it less noisy. Now the matress rests on only wood planks, and would rubbing soap or surf wax on them help cure the creakiness?

Your bolts are loose. Try tightening them and if this doesn't work, buy some new ones. You will have to make new holes so you might want to get an electric drill. Otherwise, you are out of luck. If the bolts are made of metal, maybe, just maybe, WD40 could do the job. Also, your mattress needs to be on a box spring to protect it.
Good repairing. I hope you don't have to purchase a new mattress, but it may be your best solution.
