Will i get a fine for erecting a conservatory without freehold permission?

I own my own house and 2 years ago put a conservatory up at the back of my house, we were told we didn't need planning permission because of the size etc. Today i recieved a letter from the 'freehold company' asking if i have a conservatory, extension, caravan on the property..i rang and they said i needed permission before erecting it... Anyone else been in this position and did u get a fine for this?.....(( in case u wondering what 'freehold' actually means..this means u own the house but they own the land its on))

The owner of the property can tear it down if it pleases them, you should have asked their permission before building it.
