Is the protagonist in "Written on the Body" male or female?

It's a Jeanette Winterson novel we're studying and I'm refereeing a five-hundred bucks bet btw 2 friends with too much money. Whichever answer I get the most wins.

Additional Details

Winterson never reveals, which is half the point, but nevertheless the bet is on.

Winterson never reveals whether the narrator is male or female. Rather, she teases readers out of their expectations about women and men and romance.

It is completely up to the reader to make the main character whatever gender you want him/her to be. That is one of the main points of the story. So, you're not suppose to know - it is competely up to you. Drive you crazy? I think it's neat.
