Water heater (AO Smith, power vented) gives me error code "Error in the hot surface igniter circuit"

Water heater in a rental unit was off for several weeks; now when it's been turned on it is giving an error code that translates to "Error in the hot surface ignitor circuit." The manual says to: 1) Check that all wiring is correct and secure; and 2) Replace hot surface ignitor. Nothing has changed with the wiring, so the logical answer would seem to be that I need to replace the hot surface ignitor--but the water heater is only 18 months old. The manufacturer will do a service call, but I have to pay for the labor cost, even if the part is under warranty. Any suggestions?

Right beside the hot surface igniter you will see the flame sensor, make sure there is nothing touching the sensor. A small piece of lint or soot can ground the sensor. Be careful not to touch the igniter as they are very fragile. Do a visual inspection of the igniter and if it appears cracked or broken it will need to be replaced.
