I don't have air conditioning at home; any suggestions on how to keep my pets cool?

fans....lots of fans.....make sure their water bowl is NEVER empty

A fan always helps. You can let them into the basement if you live in a house. Just putting ice cubes in the water would be good as well.

A big fan and I give my cats a bowl of fresh water with ice cubes in it. They enjoy it when it gets really hot.

Put ice cubes in their water bowl it will help them from dehydrating and keeping them cool. and if they are anything like my mother's cat thy might even make a game out of chasing the ice cubes.

Maybe you should put some ice in there water bowl or they have these little doggie deserts (at places like wal mart and meijers) you can put them in the refridgerator.

My cat likes to lie in the bathtub or sink, not filled with water though, when it is hot. The porcelin tends to stay cooler than carpets or bedding. If possible, have an uncarpeted place for your pet to lie on, like a hard wood or tile floor. They also make this thing for dogs that you wet and you put it around their neck, my sister's dog loves his. The other ideas posted are all great ideas too.

Everyone's suggestions are great--fans, cold water etc. One more suggestion. Soak a t-shirt (but not one of those really thin ones) in cold water and put it on your dog ( you try it with a cat, using a baby size t-shirt, but cats are less cooperative). Pull the dog's front paws through the sleeves and then tie the wet t-shirt up on the dog's back so that he can still walk. My dogs always stop panting when I do that.

Maybe you could put an ad in the paper that you are needing one, or one of the freecycle groups. Find one near you by going here...www.freecycle.org then find the state you live in and under that you can find your city or somewhere close by. Get them a kiddie pool, put it in the shade and fill it with cool water! (Unless they are cats, then that might be a problem)!

First of all, make sure plenty of water is available at all times. I sometimes will even add an ice cube to my dog's dish to help keep the water cool. Keep blinds/curtains closed. Run fans and consider a window fan when possible. Pets may be more comfortable in a dark area, such as under the bed. Let them roam and they will find the coolest spot for them. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion. Signs that a pet may be overheated include heavy panting, drooling, rapid breathing, muscle tremors or seizures. If this happens, contact vet immediately. Let them out for exercise in the evenings when air is cooler. Also consider a little kiddie pool for pets to cool off in.

Definitely make sure your shades are drawn to block out sunlight, which would warm up your home. When you leave water for them, leave a few ice cubes in the bowl or dish. They will melt throughout the day, keeping the water cool. Also, my cats used to only drink running water - you could also leave your bathroom or kitchen sink running with cool water.
