I have found a (3 in.) green catepillar on my chili plants. It has a spike on one end. What are they?

Sounds like a tomato worm. They will eat other plants if planted close to tomato plants. Use Sevin in powder form, just sprinkle it on and re-apply after rain. Usually available at garden centers and hardware stores. Hope this helps.

probably the larva stage of a moth. Look moths up on the web aand find your culprit

Sounds like either a tomato worm or a tobacco worm (tobacco, tomato, and peppers are all in the nightshade family). They turn into moths.
